Default 1973 Window Motor

How do I take out my driver side window motor so I can put a new one in?

See if this helps

Also if the existing motor is not working it's harder to get that window to the point where you can bolt through the gear to keep it fixed while removing the motor (very important to keep it from letting the spring let go)
If the window is all the way up, use some plastic/rubber faced clamps on the glass to hold it up while removing the motor

Need to know if your window is all the way UP or not.

Putting a screw or bolt to hold the regulator in postilion is NOT needed IF the regulator is still in the car. The spring will NOT allow the window to come DOWN and hurt you. The spring is there to aid in RAISING the window due to the weight of the glass and thus does not cause added strain to the motor.

If you spring on your regulator is intact and good...if the motor is removed...you can push down on the glass and it will come back up.

IF you window motor is STUCK DOWN and WILL NOT come up...you have to remove the black square section of the motor so the worm gear can be removed so it frees up the regulator and allows the glass to be raised.

NOW...at the bottom of the regulator (if all is still factory correct)...there is a bolt holding the regulator to the door. You can see the bracket when you remove the black metal access panel. This bolt must be removed. This will allow the regulator to be able to be pushed back so the motor can come out.

Removing the THREE bolts that hold the motor to the regulator can be a bit tricky and I use a wrench when I do it. Then there is a plate and a SPECIAL bushing that goes in this plate that makes sure the gear on the motor stays where it need to and not wear out the gear on the regulator.

When you go an install the new motor. LOOK CAREFULLY at the THREE mounting points on the motor itself. You will see that they should have a shoulder on each if them where the aluminum gets a bit narrower. The reason for these shoulders is so you MUST get the motor indexed into the regulator so the motor can not pivot or move. When I am installing a motor..I MAKE SURE I get it indexed CORRECTLY before I get everything tight.
