Just bought new 15x8 Rallye wheels from Zip Corvette. They came powder coated silver. Do they need to be painted? They look great as is. I know the perfect silver color can be had via spraying them but I believe it's overkill. Thoughts?

If they are powder coated you will need to sand blast off coating in order to paint them
Wes
Powdercoating is just paint applied in a different manner than a spray gun we are all used to. There is no reason to blast it off if you want to topcoat it with silver enamel. I am not even sure lacquer would really hurt it, but you would have to experiment. Otherwise, if the silver powdercoating looks good, why bother unless you are trying to win NCRS awards.

FYI This is a powder coated wheel good luck trying to get paint to stick as coating is baked on
Why would you paint them, they are already painted with the toughest paint for holding up to rock chips ? That was the idea of them powder coating them .
Hi R,
There's a thread on this same page as your post in which Rowdy Rat explains the difference in color of the rally wheel silver and 'argent' paint and the likely time frame for the 2 color's use.
You might want to check that out and see if it matters to you.
Considering the amount of the wheel that is exposed I think I'd do nothing to them.
Regards,
Alan

Has nothing to do with paint adhesion. You could probably scotch brite it to give the surface some tooth, but you blasting the wheels to remove such a good product is going backwards.

Hey
Just trying to advise you .You don't just scotch brite and have powder coating take on paint Powder coating is baked on in an oven and even applying powder coat over old powder coat doesn't work .Go to a powder coating company and they will advise you that the process is meant to be a process to stay.Personaly I would leave the wheels as they are
Wes
Sometimes powder coat can have good cohesion but poor adhesion, you know a hard shell that remains (for a while) unbroken but does not stick to the metal underneath, in a way like POR can do but if water gets under it off it comes in sheets,
People do scuff/prep and paint over powder coating with satisfactory results but yeah, in this case the only reason you would wanna do that is some purist or modding idea to change the color the wheels were powder coated because in this case it's better than paint.

Yup, and good luck media blasting powder coated wheels.

I've had customers come into the shop with frames etc. and want additional brackets welded on to the frame after powder coating and that stuff is so hard that it is hard to grind down through it with a rock grinder. So media blasting , I don't think so!

Glad to see someone that knows what they are talking about .My wheels came with a 5 year guarantee from chipping and peeling .
