Default I know nothing about this .

Other than what I have read on dustless blasting.
My cars is going into the shop because of a deer hit . The shop wants to repaint the front half to the doors and needs to strip it . Insurance says no only part of it . From what I read dustless is a hit or miss depending on who's doing it . Most up here are boat repair so I don,t know if they know anything about a car. They want 500 to do the front half . The guy doing the repairs said part of what he quoted would go towards it since he didn't have to do it. Told him I didn't know enough about it but I want in writing that if we decide to do it ,the guy doing it will pay if there's any damage to the surface . What do you guys think ? I have read the posts on here and back then it sounds like it could go either way . Has anything changed?

Hi UP,
Boats have gelcoat on the top surface of the fiberglass. Corvettes do not.
When removing paint from a Corvette the media used, the pressure at which its blown, and the operator's experience is CRITICAL to ensure the surface of the fiberglass is not breached and damaged.
Regards,
Alan

1000%!!!!!!

I do not mean on being so direct...BUT....You MUST give your YEAR model when you post questions...beacsue GM used different types of body materials that react differently to an abrasive.

I would NO SODA BLAST it at all costs (wet or dry)....but that is just me.

Before you let anyone blast your Corvette....even with a piece of paper that holds them liable for damages....you DO NOT want to go down that path.

IF the person does not KNOW what they are doing when blasting it or have countless Corvettes under their belt...the damage...if 'they' are allowed to keep on blasting can be so extensive that you will wish you had NEVER done this.

Also...keep in mind...that the person doing this and depending on what they are doing.....some areas of a Corvette when blasted can be destroyed becasue of the vortex of the air and how the media will not get into a tight area without completely damaging the surrounding area. DO NOT ask me how I KNOW THIS.

Thanks.

If you are forced to use this method of paint removal by the shop doing the work because they do not feel comfortable in using chemical. Hopefully whoever is using the equipment is careful....as had been previously mentioned.

Ask the person doing baking soda blasting if he has done corvette work before? Dustless is different and lot more pressure.
Wes

I'm with DUB and Alan on this one, I've known a lot of boat guys having grown up on the coast, and having many boats in my family. A Corvette is NOT a boat! If they have never blasted a 'Vette, you don't want them learning on yours!!!
