Default 71 Engine feedback

Hi C3 lovers,

I'm still on the hunt for my dream car. Can some of the 71 experts take a look a this motor and evaluate it for originality? It is numbers matching but I'm not sure of the small details of what should and should not be under the hood.

Sorry but this is the only angle I currently have. I've asked for more and will add them once received.

Thanks again.

Looks otherwise stock to me for a base engine, 4 speed, no AC, and with factory radio.

FWIW: these are worth their prices:

Shouldn't you have a dual snorkel breather? Also, shouldn't there be a hose from the vapor canister to a T connector at the PCV?

Waiting for Alan to comment, but until he does here's a picture of your '71 engine:

If memory serves, the early cars got the chrome top open element air cleaners. Later in production, they went to the chrome top snorkel type.

That would make sense, but didn't they still have the sticker on the lid?

Hi,
Actually the closed base, duel snorkel air cleaner appeared on late 70 model year base and 454 engines after approximately serial no. 12000.
The open base continued into 71-72 on LT-! and LS6 engines.

Looks like a pretty nice compartment based on 1 photo.
Regards,
Alan

Curious what this is?

A quick glance reveals: Missing emissions sticker (behind the brake booster), Wrong air cleaner and air cleaner lid, Vacuum hose routing re PCV valve

This is my 71 base motor, automatic, AC car (I think your fan shroud is right, mine is for an AC car only I believe)

Look for your CEC solenoid too, as that is a 71 specific part which was frequently removed/disabled.

Hi TL7, what kind of tape did you use to wrap your vacuum hoses in the PCV routing?

Regards, Dave

I'm not sure, the hoses were tapped like that when I got it and they haven't come loose. The tape is cloth backed and rough to the touch.

Thanks, it sounds like friction tape we used on power cable ends in TELCO power plants.

Hi TL7,
Nice looking compartment!
Lot's of details to notice.
Do you think the air cleaner base filter advisory is original?
If I may; what's the sequence #?
Regards,
Alan

I think it looks great! you will be happy that you have that air cleaner. I had to purchase one for my 72 and it was expensive but its what has to be on there for hood clearance. the po I bought mine from was running an after market air cleaner and never checked for clearance on the center stud. hit the bottom of the hood and cracked the paint.. guess what im doing next week. yup repainting the hood. congrats on your purchase!

If I had to guess I would say its a repro. My reasoning being that in the box-o-parts I got with the car had my original air cleaner lid in it (albeit in rough shape, and this air cleaner base is in pristine shape). I don't doubt that its a high quality repro though because when I got it judged no one said anything, and I haven't seen any marks on the PO's judging sheets either.
