The NCRS judging manual assigns points for originality and condition. My question is "If you have a non-original part that is new and in perfect condition, do you get the points for condition?". My car came with a vinyl seats that I changed to leather and over the years I have also replaced the Q'Jet, alternator, etc with NAPA items that do not have the proper date codes.
Hi t,
An interesting question!
The Judging Reference Manual indicates the a part must score at least 10% of the available Originality points available for that item to be able to score any Condition points.
A part's Originality is judged in 5 criteria… Configuration, Completeness, Date, Installation, and Finish.
A carb that met all the Criteria except the DATE would receive 80% of the originality and COULD achieve all the Condition points.
So depending just what your NAPA carb is, IT COULD achieve enough Originality points to also achieve Condition points.
Flight Judging isn't as scary as many people think!
You might want to take a peek at the NCRS site.
Click on Home, Site Map, and then Judging Awards for a brief explanation of how a car is Flight Judged.

As far as leather goes if you installed a full deluxe interior it won't matter if it came with vinyl. You aren't judged against the option list.
Alan, I was looking at their site a few days ago, and I could not locate a judging manual for my 1972. Am I missing something, or could these just be out of print for now?

OK, now I`m curious. If judging includes "originality"...but the trim tag doesn`t have to match what interior is installed, would that also mean that the exeroir paint color can be different than what the trim tag says?
And if this is correct, NO points are deducted for those changes?

They just updated it. It was introduced at Carlisle. They are back now I ordered mine this weekend. Supposed to be a big improvement with added content and color pictures. Go to store and C3 library. You don't have to be a member to see it or view the forum for that matter.
Hi c,
As da said the new 70-72 TIM&JG was first available at Carlisle.
It really is quite a terrific compilation of information and photographs.

A way to look at it is you buy a new Delco battery that looks nothing like the original but is the same brand you get 10% + condition points but if it's a NAPA battery you get NO originality or condition points.
So, I guess if you shell out $400 for a look-alike battery that was not made by Delco nor sold by GM...but it says Delco and all the external features are right, you will get max points and originality?

Hi71vette,
You are correct in your statement, but during judging its still not necessarily so. For example, the correct battery for my 73 small block was the Delco R89S and the correct battery for the 73 BB was the HEavy Duty Delco R89W. However, if you purchase the "Restoration" Delco R89S the top of it has the cell lines visibly running through it. These were not visible from what I've been told, so they are "Not as original" so you may and probably will get a minor deduct. But the "Restoration" Delco R89W Heavy Duty does not have these lines in the top. It looks like the original. So, many or most guys will buy this one and get no deducts, because in 73 you could order the HD battery (T60) for your small block. Therefore, it could have been on your car originally, so no deduct. I just couldn't break down and spend all the $$$$ for a restoration battery for just that one day of judging. So I bought a new Delco battery and settled for the 50% deduction for originality. For the 73 and other years you get a total of 30 pts for battery originality and condition. I was ok with the 15. If you have any other battery other than an AC Delco brand you will receive a 100% deduct for both originality and condition. I hope this makes sense.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure these batteries are very good and I know many guys purchase them for judging. I was just using them as an example in response to 71vette.
First pic below is the Resto R89S showing the lines in the top.
Second pic is the Resto R89W with no visible lines.

If the car is over all amazing, I've seen people weigh the cost of that battery to how many points they would lose for non-original battery.
Soooo, the whole thing is just a money game. Who can spend the most to buy the best "looking" after-the-fact parts wins the prize. That's exactly why I'm not a member. In my mind, the car that drives in with the most [actual] factory original parts would win....regardless of looks. NCRS should think about their stated purpose...which is pretty good...and consider whether their judging policies and awards actually work to achieve their own stated purpose.
P.S. For those who want to belly-ache about my post, the Corvette Forum is NOT an NCRS site; it is an open forum. Thank you very much...

No winners & no losers only points deducted for non original or warn parts. Any car show is about money as the person that spent the most usually wins. People spend 200,000.00 on a resto mod 67 because they want to. I say to each his own & enjoy all the cars original restored or moded.
