Default Roters and pads

Hey Guys,

Couple of quick questions.

Can the rotors and pads for 1980 be picked up at the local hardware store? I don't need performance parts as I am just driving around for fun. Trying to save some money here as most kits for rotors and pads are over $200.

What is the difference between organic pads and hawk pads?

Thanks.

Got my pads and rotors at Autozone. Pick up the phone or go online and check the auto parts store for who has what.

Agree!!!

For a Sunday driver, I buy AutoZone "equal to OEM" pads, rotors, and rebuilt calipers with a life time warranty, cheap and utilitarian

I bought rear rotors for my 2002 Silverado from AutoZone and two years later right after the warranty ran out ( two year warranty ) they rusted and separated so bad that it was ruining brake pads. I went to O'Reilly's and bought two new rotors with a LIFETIME warranty. They are the only auto parts store that offers a lifetime warranty on rotors and you can clearly see the difference in quality. We are finally getting some O'Reilly stores in our area and they will be getting my business.

Calipers too? I was about to buy a kit from one of our vendors. You actually suggest getting those from an AutoZone or Advanced?

Bought my pads and rotors from NAPA. I've bought calipers from them also. I'm happy with their products.

Are you sure you need rotors? OEM C3 rotors tend to last hundreds of years.

Also, original rotors are riveted to the hub. If they need any machining, it can be performed using a frame-mounted tool to turn them.

I'd first check to see if your original rotors could be turned. I had all four of mine turned for $40 at a local shop. Had to drill the front rotor rivets out of mine but that job was easier than I thought it would be. Pads from any major parts vendor should be fine however I bought my pads online from Zip Products and my calipers from Vettco ($395 for all 4).

Yep, I have bought 3 caliper sets from Autozone and all 3 on 3 different C3's worked great. ditto a friend of mine too who originally suggested Autozone. I am sure Oreilly is good too and might be the same supplier too? ha! So I have had good luck going with them. Hope you have the same luck if you decide to go this route.

I got ALL my brake components (except emerg. brake parts) from AZ....good parts!

Have you double-checked to make sure your calipers are not leaking??

This'd be the bestest time to do all that.....cuz it'd be a pain to go back later & tear it all apart just to change the calipers, bleed the brakes, & assemble AGAIN!!

lol, 100s?

I had a mechanic friend out to take a look at them. He said that when you get brake fluid all over rotors is happening (calipers need replaced), they typically need to replace the pads and rotors. I really didn't understand why. I thought you just just wipe it off. But he was pretty confident about it. Should I be second guessing that? If anyone is in the Indianapolis area and wants to come check out my situation, please offer. I will buy you meal/drink.

Interesting, I can understand brake fluid on the pads but the rotors too? I thought that was what brake cleaning fluid was for? assuming rotors are not scored too bad and minimum thickness. Time for a second opinion, IMHO.

Good luck to you

As stated rotors should be turned.
I was going to replace my original blued 68 rotors.
My mechanic friend almost back handed me.
He turned them and they stop great.
He said never trade good US steel for Chinese crap.
A good quality pad can be had from Delco or Rock Auto etc...
