Anybody know how to remove the wiper arm ('68) from the keyed shaft that is bolted to the firewall...i.e. pivot point of the wiper arm. CSM and AIM, and Chilton's are no help.
The CSM literally says "Remove wiper arm and blade assemblies from the transmission." OK, thanks.
I can't see how the arm releases from the shaft. I have a lighted mirror to see the underside but it just looks like the arm is pushed on.

That arm does just slide down on the shaft . There is a spring that puts pressure on the arm to keep the wiper tight on the glass so it just puts a bind on the arm and shaft making it harder to slide off . They make a tool for that to make it easier but you don't need it just pry it off from underneath. Put something under it to prevent damage.
Pressure from the spring helps retain it to the shaft. There is a keyway.
I replaced my pass side , the end busted off from 45 years of fatigue . Got a nos one from a vendor . I used a screwdriver and gentle pry , it came up and off. Go slow and steady.
Thanks Guys. I found the keyway on the shaft and I can see the splines. The CSM indicates that there is clip on the left side. The torque from the spring makes sense. It's probably gunked up in there. I'll see if I can get a a little PB blaster to wick up there. I'll clean it up a bit. Torque holding it on makes sense. I swear I've done this on another '68 GM product.
Agree, this special tool is the way to go. This cheap tool to remove the wiper arm makes it so easy, you will never want to do it any other way.
I'll rarely decline the opportunity to buy tools but if I want this out sooner rather than later and hope to never do it again....

The 'clip'.
I found the the clip after a little cleaning with PB Blaster.
You say to 'depress.' That could mean I'm going to push down to the floor. In your view though, depress could mean I'm going to pull up relative to the floor.... I'm thinking i'm going to make a tool tool pull the tab upward. ???
Hi,
The tool shown doesn't have anything to do with the spring clip that holds the arm in place on the transmission.
It's intent is to release the pressure on the spring (arrow) that holds the arm tight against the windshield.
When THAT pressure is released the clip can be depressed in the direction shown so the arm can be slid off the transmission.
When the arm is slid ON to the transmission the clip snaps over it's end. Releasing the arm's pressure on the windshield allows the clip to be depressed when the arm is pulled back OFF the transmission.
You don't ever have to touch the clip.

Alan
Just buy the tool and pull straight up . The tool neutralizes the tension on the spring. The only thing that sometimes makes it hard to remove is corrosion on the splines.

It'll be at my local auto parts store tomorrow for $5.69. Free in-store pick-up. I'll see if I can get more PB Blaster to wick up there tonight.

NO need to mess with the clip, tab or anything...just pull straight up. Sometimes a slight rocking motion helps.

I realize this is an older post but wanted to pass along my experience.
I couldn’t find the tool locally and didn’t want to wait for shipping so I made my own tool using a paint can opener. I put it in my vise and bent it to get a better prying angle.
After covering all surfaces to protect them, I just used a small rolled up piece of cardboard as a fulcrum and the wiper popped right off👍🏻
To remove the wiper arm on my 94 LT1 I slid out 1/6 of an inch, the small clip on the side of the arm, and pried the arm up with small crowbar.Cam off with ease. I will post a pic later
