Sanded down my 77 and still waiting for my Daughters shop to clear out so I can get her in for paint. So got bored and last week pulled the engine and trans.Today I pulled the valve covers, intake and the oil pan off looks OK so far. It's only Feb so I got time.Whats next?
How's the fron end? the ball joints, control arm bushings, you could blast and repaint it all while you are in there, should keep you busy until Feb, 2018

Wow, not sure it that was boredom or being ambitious! Are you going deeper in to the engine or? If you' re not going farther, change the thermostat and give it a good paint job!
BTW...if you continue to be bored...come on over to the house and help me paint the bonus room!
I was looking at the engine compartment ,one of the reasons for pulling the engine,I'm going to clean and paint.I called my buddy at CJC auto parts and ordered all of the front end stuff, bushings, ball joints, etc.I did the rear when I first got the car.Took the intake off and the pan. The bearings look good and the engine ran good,no oil smoke. The engine needs all new gaskets and seals ,also new timing chain.I'll have to use a spring compressor to get the arms off ,no engine to help with the spring.
I use a long piece of 5/8 all thread shoved up through the hole where the shock was. Put a big washer and nut top and bottom to compress the spring. No chance of it getting away as you remove and install. Cheap and safe!
Just a thought, if your waiting to get the car into the shop, what happens if they call and say OK bring it in and you have it in pieces all over your shed ?
Will think about the rod idea.I hope it only takes a days work to replace the bushings and the ball joints. She " My Daughter" said she would give me a week notice and I'm not going to put the engine and trans back in until spring it's to cold out to pressure wash and paint.I'll wash and paint the engine compartment when it's at the shop.

I have used the threaded rod idea and its pretty much fool proof (that's why I liked it !) . Yes one day with nothing going wrong ,you get the right parts from the seller , no interruptions and if your not going to paint it all pretty and such. What can go wrong ?
Got home from work today and took the drivers side spring out used an OEM 27035 tool that I rented from auto parts store ,it's going to take longer than I thought.I just can't put the stuff back in without painting. So will be cleaning and painting than installing new bushings and ball joints and shocks.
My stuff does not look like that yet ,but tomorrow it will look close.Getting the old bushings out was a JOB.Going to get some 5/8 rod and try that to put the spring back in.And I thought it would only take a day.

'75 thanks I used you're idea on the 5/8 rod and worked like champ very safe and fast.I bought some 5/8 fine thread and some over sized nuts and washers.I also built a square plate for the bottom hole.
