Hi C,
I think the change occurred…77-78-79?. Someone else will know.
The casting date on the block's rear flange will help pin down when the engine may have been assembled…. although it doesn't matter beyond identifying the engine's origin.
Regards,
Alan
120085 is the consecutive unit number for the car. The consecutive unit number becomes part of the complete VIN.
All 1971 Corvettes have the 1 following the plant code (S for St. Louis). The car in the pic was the 20085th 1971 Corvette assembled. Total production was 21801 cars. #20085 was completed near the end of the 1971 production run (21801 - 20085 = 1716 before end of year.) Yes... June 22nd build date

Isn`t it sometimes easy to tell, via wrong font type, or uneven row of numbers?
If casting numbers can be changed then numbers matching means absolutely nothing. No wonder Barrett Jackson has so many cross the block.
In the 80's almost no car I ran into that was SHP , 302 Z28 , or such had the original motors . Most did not even have a engine period . 80 % were blown up. ,especially 4 Spd, mechanical lifter and big blocks . Base cars and automatics often were correct. Not BB cars. Maybe 1 in 10 had a original block ....and usually itbwas an auto car. I saw tons of CE BB car .
Then 1000 ' s were decked .
Then in the mid 90's , a wonderful thing happened , cars miraculous started appearing with correct engines.
BB C2 cars began to rise from their graves
Suddenly every C2 was matching numbers .....hog wash .....
I was mostly concerned the VIN, engine and trans all had matching numbers, so there was a good chance that a prior owner had not done an engine or trans swap for a cheap auto zone exchange. Good Luck and have fun. Greg
