I can measure my '71's if you want. That way if you want to buy some you'll at least know if they will fit.
I can pretty much tell you that the 71s are shorter than later 70s. I was given a set from 77-80 in good shape... but they were too long for my 71. I bought some correct ones from a forum member for my 71.... and side by side, there`s a couple inch difference. The longer set I then sold to another forum member.
All you need to do is remove the black paint. Use a chemical stripper, rather than to try sanding the paint off. If you sand, you will damage the coating on the aluminum. Just strip the paint off and repaint the black stripe with semi-flat or satin black paint.
