When a company says will not clear hood are they talking with the stock air cleaner or a low profile . Plus if you lay a stock 1976 air cleaner on a table , what is the thickness of the air cleaner ? My intake now a torker 2 shows a 1 1/4 " clear at the front of it and more as you go to the rear . I ordered a rpm air gap and when I read one post it says it will clear and when I read another it says it won't . From what I read the air gap is .64 inch higher then my torker 2 . Having it installed in two weeks don't want to have to buy a new hood just got the last one painted .
Just went out , took the top off the air cleaner and set a 2 inch filter element on top of the 3 inch . The hood closed no problem . Put the top back on and set the 2 inch on top of it and the hood wouldn't close looked like it was about 1/2 inch from shutting . So I am thinking the .64 difference between the two shouldn't make a difference .
Probably a dumb question but what are guys doing to check to see if there is clearance when installing a new cleaner? Can't really see, even with a flash light, under the hood and I certainly would hope people are let just slamming the hood down and praying it clears. Just didn't know if anyone had a trick.

The way I do is put a piece of silly putty at the highest point, usually the post at the carb center that the wing nut screws onto. Bring the hood down before latching and check to see if the silly putty has compressed. If not, try latching the hood and recheck.
Just make sure that the center post is the highest point and the hood doesn't have contours that put another part of the air cleaner into play. Turns out on my 73 with the stock air cleaner, that point is on the front edge of the air cleaner.

I just make a wad of aluminum foil and place it on top of the air cleaner, close the hood then when you open it you can measure the height
Play-doh. Make a ball and set it on top of the air cleaner towards the front and maybe at the center. Close hood slowly.
I use a modeling clay...but same idea. I knead the modeling clay so it is softer and I will lay a piece of tape on it so I do not leave any oily mark on the underside of the hood. I close the hood normally...mainly because the stands I make out of the modeling clay are like Vienna sausages and they will not damage the hood....or at least for me..I have never damaged a hood closing it
THEN..I also compensate for engine movement when it is running...because NOT all engines are perfectly still when running.
