Condition being equal, and VERY nice given the prices, I'd go with the '72. Last of the full chrome bumper cars, LT1 and AC. The AC tips it for me. Can't enjoy a Corvette where I live without AC. IIRC the 72 LT1 is detuned with the AC or maybe GM just set the redline lower. I'm old and I forget stuff like that...
Too many one off parts on a '68 for me and also some initial quality issues. Those should be sorted by now, but I don't think '68s have ever been worth as much as an identically equipped '69.
Assuming both cars are real, I would go with the 68 L71. By 1972, the LT-1 was a shadow of its 1970 self. The 255HP it pumped out was roughly equivalent to the 300 (Gross) HP base engine cars just a few years earlier. And I think 68s get a bad rap for either its uniqueness or quality.

Hi VG,
I take it from your second post that you've made up your mind.
Have you in fact purchased it?
Certainly a very 'fresh' looking pad on the 72!
You have to be SO careful with LT-! cars these days…… and what you pay for them.
Regards,
Alan
build a clone its cheaper and noone else cares except a small percentage of vette guys

64s too. If someone decides they dont want thier worthless car Ill take it;dont leave it to your kid to fire sale Ill take care of it and drive it like it was meant to be. Anybody want to adopt an older son with lots of issues? LOL
Along the lines of Alan's point, you can't come close to deciding whether the prices on these two cars are fair until you (on your own or with the help of an expert) determine if these cars are legit. My gut tells me an LT-1 born with A/C would be worth more than that. They just didn't make a lot, one year only, and the guys who like LT-1's REALLY like them. So demand is high.
Call me a contrarian, but I hear so many things about 68's being glitchy and quirky that it just makes me want one more. Also: the push button door release is an all time great auto styling cue.
Last comment: when you boil it all down, if you determine both cars are priced fairly, and you're agnostic between a big block and a high revving small block, then let the roof decide: t-tops and convertibles are very different cars. Not "better" or "worse", just different.

Alan,
I'm getting an inspection of the car on Monday by Glenn at Corvette Cosmetics in NJ. He has done inspections for other CF members and he knows his LT1's. If the real deal, I'll commit with a bigger deposit and fly to NJ on Saturday to see her first hand and escort her into the enclosed trailer.
I really appreciate all your experience and opinions.

Hey @VoltGuy, do you have information about the initial purchaser of your '72 LT-1? I've always been curious what happened to my dads. Sorry to reply to an old thread, but I cannot directly message you until I become a "seasoned" member. :|
Thanks. Trevor
