Default 1971 lt1

I am looking at a 1971 LT1 and need some help verifying a true LT1
I hope to go to Michigan in a week to view the car and need to know if a NCRS member could help
me verify the authenticity. I am willing to pay for the advice. I don't want to make a 50K mistake.
thanks

you could also post some detailed pictures and get some opinions ahead of your trip so that it doesnt turn into a wasted trip.

Hi Topless,
That certainly looks like an attractive 71 from what I can see!
What sort of car are you looking for?
The one in the photos appears to have had some modifications done in the engine compartment, interior, and chassis.
This MAY NOT MATTER to you, but you should be aware of the changes that have been made because that may affect what would be a fair price for the car.
There are many active NCRS members in Michigan. Stating the area in which the car located would help in locating someone.
There are various things to carefully look for in determining the likelihood that a particular car left St.Louis as an LT-! car. So it's important to have someone very familiar with LT-! cars in particular take a look at it with you.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

do you have a picture of the engine stamp pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head?
from the pictures that you have posted
1. The rear spring is not the original or the correct type.
2. Non-factory steering wheel.

a spring made from steel, that is a fiberglass spring and appears to be missing the heat shield to protect it from the exhaust pipes.

Hi T,
The engine compartment is quite nice looking and 'tidy'.
A couple of things in the engine compartment though...
The 71 LT-! engine originally had an A.I.R. system on it that was part of the emission equipment on certain 71model year engines.
It appears that all the AIR equipment is missing. You may not want to replace it but it was there originally....and is costly to replace.
The valve covers aren't for a 71 LT-!.... they had a black rubber push in oil filler cap. They required a different valve cover than what's on this engine.
The water pump on the car has a 'boss' with a plug in it. Water-pumps for 71 didn't have the boss or plug.
The white plastic washer bottle isn't in it's usual place and has no filler neck on it.
Regards,
Alan

Never seen a fibreglass spring with the original type steel clamps (shipping ? ) on it . has a "hold together bolt and nut " on it still as well .

also missing the little battery compartment drain thingy ( for 50k , I would want one ! )

Hi t,
It's difficult to just what the spring on this car is from the single photo of it.
A picture of it from a different angle would help clear up what it is.
Here's a photo of a typical 9 leaf spring.
Regards,
Alan

The drain. A small inexpensive item

It's not that bad , but these guys will pick the hell out of a car , which is what any buyer would want so your not going into a deal with out full knowledge of what IT is or more realistically what's happened to it over the years .

Steel clamps on the spring , apparently put there by the original spring makers , and supposed to be taken off ( this is what I have read ) but some weren't , that car still has them , definitely not a bad thing .you can see the bottom of them ,one on each side
edit : as Alan says , you need a better pic to see if its the correct type (amount of leafs )

battery drain thingy , is just a small plastic tube that sits in the bottom of the battery compartment drain hole , I always thought of it as a venturi type thing to help suck the fumes out ! . cost about $5 or close . absolutely no deal breaker !

its the big one of these ,

Hi b,
The plastic battery manifolds and hoses were to control the fumes in the battery compartment.
The drain was indeed a drain in case the battery was overfilled while the water level was being checked.

Alan
