it's been a while... by and large because it took me 6 months to find the right person to paint the car, wait for them to have capacity to paint it... and then paint it!
anyways... I'm now starting to put my '68 back together. In it's previous existance, it was a debadged rat rod... I am attempting to recreate a standard-ish appearance.
So... i'm trying to retrofit the 'c o r v e t t e' badge on the back. I'm reusing the original (i think) holes... and have the pictured result...
Now... if i get a spirit level out.... across the width of the word, it is about 1/4 inch off level.... and... to my eye, at least.. a few of the letters look a bit squiff... the question for you lot is simple... am i being OCD?? if this were your car, would you try to correct?
how even was the OEM fit? (and yes, i know the license plate scuttle isnt a clean fit atm - the bolts are only finger tight while i tinker with other bits and pieces)

Reason: .
It looks bang on to me. I measured my 69 and from the farthest left on the "C" to the outside or right side of the "E" (total width of the lettering) is 15 1/8 inches.

Hi DV,
The 'apparent' difference in the placement of the R and V would bother me.... but I don't know if I'd do anything about it.
It looks to me like the COR were put on as a group, and then the VETTE as a group.
It's minor... but OCD allows you/me to see NOTHING BUT THAT!
Regards,
Alan
Will putting the bumpers and license bezel in place help distract your eye?
The LAST thing you want is to somehow end up with a slightly visible hole next to a letter.
Here's an example of an original panel and holes.
Can you tell if your mounting holes have been 'moved' at all?
No problem. Simple fix, let some of the air out of the tires on one side!!!!!
I have the same issues, whenever I do something myself, my demand for quality is much higher for my work than I would ever even remotely expect and demand from some one else!!
I see it as both a blessing and a curse!!
Difficult to say from the pics is my opinion. You need to place some kind of reference line, like a taped line mentioned above and be certain that your camera is level to the lettering and parallel to the car's rear end.
That will tell you what to want to know. Good luck!!!! Ike
Allan..... where did you get hold of those nifty rubber grommets? - mine are the hard metal speednut type fixing, which are very difficult to fit without dislodging the letter from the 'right' spot (or; at least... the best i can get it without reinventing the wheel!)
to that effect... I spent another 15 minutes fettling... with a 1/12 drill bit, by hand... ever so slightly cleaning/expanding the holes in various directions... i got a slighlty improved result; to the extent that i don't think it'll bother me once the rest of the car is together (and I've have now lost the will to live!)
and.. i'm horrified observe... I now know all about the 'too big hole' - I've got one on my hood!
Most annoyingly, I had actually filled this hole - it seems that the filler got knocked out in transit/handling and the painter did not notice it. it's just under the top sweep of the '7'
Do know that truly proper type faces find rounded letters like "O" and "C" slightly taller than straight letters like "T" and "E". Doing this makes them appear the same size to the eye; not doing it makes the round letters look too small. It also means that you can't use a straightedge to align most letter sequences.
OMG, we must have been separated at birth, and THANKS for giving me something else to agonize over................. soooooooo, I have attached photos with a bull nosed level of the C-O-R-V-E-T-T-E letters on the *** end of my 72' and they are not even close to perfect when placed on a straight edge, but to the eye they appear perfect.
I hope this adds to your agony
Dave, i'm the first one to notice crooked pictures in a house and i always go fix them, no matter who's house it is. To that extent, your letters look fine to me and I would loose no sleep over them. As a side note, it looks like a pretty nice paint job you've got there too.
It's fine. You have just been working so hard on it, you're noticing 'normally' imperceptible differences that are really meaningless.
P.S. Let this be a learning lesson, also. Never ask an expert group what color to paint the bicycle rack. Everyone will have a different opinion (because everyone has at least TWO!) and the collective group will NEVER come to a consensus.
Your car looks GREAT! The letters look FINE! Keep up the great work; and quit sweating the small stuff.
Merry Christmas!
