Default 1970 Front Bumper Install

Hello Everyone!

I have been looking around this forum for quite some time. I have a 1970 Corvette that i have purchased without the bumpers on the vehicle. When time came around to put the front bumper on I got stuck. I have looked at the diagrams and it shows shims along with bolts, but inside of the bumper bend it seems to have a nut or threaded insert but i have neither.

I circled where my issue is.
Any help will be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Welcome!
First post!!
Sorry to have to say it but there should be a large nut welded to a small bracket in each corner of the front bumper.
A single bolt passes through 2 small brackets and a hole drilled in the body and tightens into that nut.
Depending on the fit of the bumper to the body shims may or may not be needed.
What does the inside of your bumper look like? Is there any clue that the nuts were once there?
Regards,
Alan

The bracket and nut in the bumper corner.

The bolt and brackets.

Hello Alan,

Thanks for the quick response. The bumper has the no weld nuts installed where they should be.Has the mounting tab but no nut behind it. Not sure what my options are now.

Thanks,
Mark

Can you weld? Any nut which would fit the bolt can be welded to the rear of the tab.

Could a nut be finessed behind the tab and held with a wrench? Welding I think would be difficult without removing the tab to weld but on. Then rewelding the tab will probably eff up the chrome.

Hi Mark,
If welding isn't an option...
I believe in tightening the bumper mounting bolts only tight enough to BEGIN to set the lock washers. (YOU need to decide if that's o.k. for your situation.)
So:
I'd use something like JB Weld to hold the nut in place and then be VERY CAREFUL in tightening the bolt so the nut doesn't break loose.
There's quite a bit of surface on the nut and bracket so you should be able to get a good bond.
Maybe?
???
Regards,
Alan

Thanks,
Looks like I will pull the bumper back off and see what it will take to put a nut back behind the tab.

Thanks
Mark

You could enlarge the hole that is there, and tap it to a threaded insert or helicoil. All manner of these are available although I haven't researched the thread sizes for you. Look here for instance

https://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-inserts/=1c8pdv5

Use thread locker to keep the insert in place, or tack weld it or whatever. As Alan says, never ever tighten the bolt down.

See if you can get a screw driver or a small crow bar that will trap the nut against the bracket to allow you to tighten the bolt without it spinning. Then simple remove it. The trick is to find something that will fit. Ike

As the members stated.....there are many options (depending on the size of the hole).

What diameter hole in the tab/bracket are you working with?

I would go with a nut set.

Basically a T nut with threads for metal.

You can set the insert with a grade 8 bolt / washers and an impact gun.
