Radiator cap question...I pulled the cap last week and it fell apart. The spring and bottom seal came off the lid. Is that repairable? Need to keep the car survivor until next year. Obviously I can get a new one for the time being but need the original in working order for next July.

Show detailed photo of the cap all sides could help make a determination.

You can have it restored - the NCRS Magazine has the place - Gen4 restorations is what I think it is called now.
Coolant after time becomes awfully acidic and will eat up metal.

Joe Perri a best friend whom had Gen4 passed away several years ago. Tim Bartsch and his number is 701-240-3750 purchased Joe's tooling and I understand does the rebuilds now.

Keith, Rather than buying a 300.+ restored cap that won't look correct on the rest of the engine compartment, you can get a new cap from Rock Auto for under 5.00 or buy a new reproduction correct looking RC 15 for under 30. shipped to use on your car.
For judging, buy a used correct cap. On the day of judging, after operations, you are put in a space with plenty of time to let the car cool down and put the correct cap on. If you don't want to take a chance and buy at a swap meet and want something used that works as well, you can buy one like this one on ebay. Pacecarjeff is reliable and if he says it will work, it does. If you contact him, he may even have one he didn't polish that looks more like a survivor.

There were 4 separate RC-15 designs make sure you buy the correct one. With Joe Perri's help rebuilding caps back several years ago Pete Lindahl and myself. The three of us had a large inventory of both original in box, restored and unrestored caps from 53 to 82. Not sure about Pete but Myself about 3 years ago sold my stockpile to Pete and others.

Joe would on the unrestored caps would replace the gasket and rivet only for individuals for their Survivor or Bowtie cars.
I would think Tim does the same thing would check with him.

First design

Second Design

3rd design what you will need

What is the difference between 2nd and 3rd design?

The rivet holding the assembly together. The second design the rivet has a recessed center while the 3rd is flat across. Ether can be rebuilt to be used on ether 2nd or 3rd design by changing the rivet.

Your cap looks like it could be rebuilt as long as there is sufficient material at the rivet hole to support the lower assembly.

Hi PJO !

Thanks again for your Corvette expertise and your advices.

I could notice my 71 LT-1 hasn't the original cap. For a 71 vette, what is the correct design ?

Thanks.

Would be the third design cap her are some photos. The caps sealing parts most likely were stainless steel but have seen several with the brass on original 1971 Corvettes but the majority were stainless steel.

The last one is a reproduction look at the shaping of the letters are very fine verses the original mush wider stamped letters.

Thank you PJO.

OK, for the third.
But I wonder about buying an original or a reproduction.

The price for survivor caps are very expensive on ebay and I can find a reproduction for $30. I prefer original parts but over $150 for a cap...

After being told on the NCRS forums I was living on borrowed time I had not really driven my car and had collected up the requisite NOS gaskets - pan rails and timing cover - and a cloyes timing set. - couldn't have been done soon enough - 46k miles - 19k since 1973.

Additionally upon disassembly I discovered my original 7712 balancer Dated A1F had slipped on the center by probably 30 degrees - and offset laterally to the rear by ~5/32"
Off to Damperdoctors in CA. for rebuild.

James,

How do you visually determine if the balancer ring has slipped?

The timing mark on the outer ring should be 10degrees BEFORE the keyway in the balancer snout.

Looking at the photo of the face of the balancer there is a white dot on the outer ring... the white dot should be just a slight bit counter clockwise of the key way - she is WAY WAY OFF! .
Mine is about 20-25 degrees after the keyway.
