In my 82 CE, I recently replaced my sending unit as the gas gauge would not register below half. Now my gas gauge is pegged past full! More like a 4 o'clock position. It stays in this position always.
When I first installed the sending unit, I saw the gauge register from E to F and back down, so I thought all was good. When the install was completed I started the car and the gauge went to full and when I drove it, it would only move when I turned a corner. Now it just stays in a 4 o'clock position.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be? Gas Gauge maybe or bad sending unit or ground wire or what. Not sure what to do next.
Wiring error. The gauge in the car is not your problem. The wiring problem is in the rear of the car. It could be the sending unit, the wiring connections, or the wire itself. If you did not mess with the sending unit grounding wire, that is unlikely to be your problem...but having done work around that grounding wire, that is still a possibility.
The only thing that concerns me about reading this is that you stated it would read correctly until it hit 1/2 tank.... and this issue could be the liner inside the tank pulling loose and getting gas behind it. This will push the liner in the way of the float and stop it from moving. So... bad as I hate to say it, if you do the gauge test and test the sender and find the missing ohms issue, you may still have an issue with the bladder inside the tank.
