Default Engine number help

Hi, New to the forum and already asking for help!

I picked up a 1977 C3 with 4 on the floor last week for a great price...

missing a few little things though
The Engine and interior (seats some trim and carpets)

The dash/cluster had been removed and the wires cut to make it easier for the remover!!!!!!!

Also everything from the dash/cluster was covered in oil residue, so everything is in pieces getting cleaned.

Anyway, I got an engine today that came out of a 1978, but I am having problems identifying the engine from the engine number, I was hoping someone could help..

Engine number is V0630FHA

I will have many questions as I try to rewire the car and rebuild!!!

Thanks

Steve

Please post some photos!

FHA is not a code used on an original engine in a C3.
http://corvettec3.ca/engines.htm

I don't even see it here:
https://nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php

Goodwrench engine perhaps?

EDIT: I think @Lachymac1 is correct, but who knows what's inside. That could be the core for a rebuild.

EDIT 2: Restamp?

Looks like the date code and plant stamp instead of the block number which I believe is found driver side rear of motor?

looks like your motor was assembled in Flint (V)

06 - June

30 - 30th

FHA - suffix code - from what I gather 1969 327ci 235hp

Because of the shape of the pad it is an early 1977 block or newer. Can't decipher which one however with that pad.

Thanks for adding photos! White C3s are favorite.

The 3 in V063OFHA looks like it was stamped over something. The "partial VIN" below looks like it was done with a CNC machine, not a stamp. Maybe I'm just imagining things.

Whatever. If the engine runs, you are one step closer to driving it. Make it stop and turn, then go drive it!

There are other FHC and FHF from '87 Truck applications. It is a later block. It is not a HP automobile engine. Not much more to know about it. You could open it up and see what is in there but I would not bother. Just run it.

Just a FYI when you decide to replace or repair the main dash harness.
It's not 100% clear from the photo of the car but I see the left side fender cross flag emblem but can't see any signs of a alarm key switch near the emblem, If so you have a late build 1977.
All late build (or 2nd design) main dash harnesses are the same auto or manual transmission.
If it's a 1st design build stay with all manual transmission 1st design wiring. There were several changes made from 1st to 2nd design.
I also see the interior courtesy light timer laying on the floor. If your plan is to reuse it make sure you keep the complete timer harness as it is a separate harness connected to the fuse panel and the main dash harness.
Also looking at some over-spray on the Wiper/Washer wires I see the original interior color looks to have been Buckskin.
Good Luck!

From the VIN my guess is a pickup truck 1977 or 1978

Division Code C = Chevy
Cab Chassis Type J = 92" Conventional Cab Tandem
Engine Code E = GM V8 Gasoline

lime book a great resource but no FHA

http://www.camaros.org/pdf/LimeBook.pdf

with that narrow. later stamp pad, doubt it's a 327

block date codes at rear will help!

Is rear main seal early 2-piece or later '87-up one piece ? The one piece seal carrier is bolted to rear external block and crank flange is quite round.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replys, I have more info after checking the block over.
I also got in touch with the guy who owned the car it came out of 1978 Vette, he is not sure if it is the original engine. but I know it is a 2 piece rear main and is an AC Delco rebuilt for GM.

It is not and original engine block for a 1978 Corvette. It is a manufactured engine assembly.

So, you have a .060" over 350 engine. 360 cubic inch.

WE KNOW it WAS a 350 (block cast reads 5.7L) but Now it's a 360-361 because label says bored OS 060 (that's the LIMIT!)
label also indicates crank is probably ground to its practical limits as well
Block casting number adjacent to label reads 638. I find Two references for 638
one is a small bore 307 w/ 2-pc rms (clearly Not this piece)
other is '87 - '95 350 with ONE piece rms; and either has OE roller lifters OR can accept OE roller lifters

your pic of block rear does not focus on space behind flexplate so cannot see if there's a seal carrier or not. Nor can I see rear of crank.

if it has OE GM heads, for that series; they're probably Not desirable. But heads' casting numbers (between springs) tells the tale.
