I bought a rebuilt tilt/tele a year or so ago.... I will tell you I paid more than your quote and it is one of the best things I ever did. The car is so much more comfortable both driving and the getting in and out.
I would check with Steering Columns Galore in NY. A number of years ago I got a tilt column for my 70 SS Chevelle for under $350 with an exchange core. It is worth a call to them. Good luck. Jerry
I would also recommend Columns Galore. I sent them my '72 tilt/tele many years ago for a rebuild. They did fine work, feels & works great to this day. IIRC, my repair bill was $650. If they do have any in stock for sale, inquire if these units have been rebuilt?
At that price you've found, I'd probably jump on it. I can't imagine one being found for less.
You may end up losing out on one just trying to save $50-$100.

I have the opportunity to get a tilt telescoping column for my 69. It is $650 + shipping which I'm guessing will be at least $100.
the column is supposed to be tight but does need a turn signal switch it comes with steering wheel.
is it worth the $700+ I will spend on it or should I shop for cheaper?
I'm a big guy and need the extra space. The standard column I can barely get in the car and it is dangerous if I was in a front collision.
thanks
Wade
One thing to consider is that the aftermarket columns like Flaming River are not collapsible in an accident so they are much more dangerous than a factory steering column. Personally I wouldn't consider an aftermarket column for this reason.

Aftermarket does have collapsible columns- Flaming River
It's function is to tilt to just get in and out of the car.
I took a little milling to fit as the nut holding the shaft was a bit too big. Not more than a 1/8 "- it's aluminum so it was pretty easy.
For the price - I was surprised at the quality.
It's set up to handle two contact horn- so one wire is not used.
The bolt pattern matches without a problem- but to using the stock wheel won't work with some modding - as it's not set up for the notch.
I'd use one of many aftermarket wheels that don't have a dish- effectively moving the steering wheel in couplel inches.
