Replacement hoods are not that expensive. It's the paint on them that is. If your looking at paint work down the road anyway, or can paint yourself. It's not to bad.
With a big block, Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake, 4150 double pumper Quick Fuel carb, 1.5” drop base air cleaner and 3” air element I just have 1/2” clearance to the bottom of the hood.
I did have a 1” spacer under my carb and I had to remove it.
That spacer won’t help you very much performance wise, but kills any chance of having a hood that closes.
My 496 doesn’t care if it’s on there or not and I’ll never use the torque my engine can put out.
Depending on how nice you want your car to be and your budget, it would be cheaper to buy an aftermarket L88 tall scoop or other type and modify your original hood by adding the scoop.
