I remember the movie, and yeah, it was pretty much a hokey, "straight to the drive-in" movie. My wife and I had just begun dating, around then, and she had an orange, '76 Corvette at the time. Of course, we attended the movie in that car....
I don't know. I remember hating that movie when I was growing up. I think it was because of what they did to that poor Corvette. Not my cup of tea. Annie Potts was not bad to look at back then though.
Actually- the first car made for the movie was from the wrecked '73 seen in the movie. So the producers actually "saved' a Corvette destined to be crushed at a junkyard. Anyway, when the movie was new, we always liked seeing Luke Skywalker driving a Corvette. The movie had some cheesy lines, Dusty Springfield - "Give Me the Night", cool cars cruising Van Nuys Blvd. Not all bad.
Whatever the significance of this movie is to anyone, the ridiculous modification of the body did nothing to improve it, and IMO ruined the beauty of the original car body style. But.....people like different things, even if it is demented.
Yeah, how dare a Corvette be modified and look different than the thousands of other Vettes out there.

You have to put it in perspective. Back then everybody customized their cars. All stock C3s (or “late models” as we called them in the 70s) were the oddball. People routinely had crushed velvet interiors, wild custom paint and more. People that know me as a stock freak cannot believe the full custom cars I had in the 70s and 80s.
So, a film about a car built in a high school shop class needed to have an over the top custom, designed by bell bottom, long sideburn wearing high school kids.
Yes its ugly, but it was what it was supposed to be. A Motion kit or Ecklers add-ons wasnt going to cut it.
This is the car I took to the drive-in to see that movie. 1968, Eckler long L88 hood with full Frank Frazetta airbrushed mural on the hood scoop. Full custom Mako Shark paint, Black pearl fading into a Silver mist on the sides. ‘72 high back seats, leather interior, chromed out engine… you get the picture.
Back when i first saw it i thought it was a pretty cool vette. Still do but i like the customs. Couple of other good car movies van nuys bvld and one i just found on y tube was hi-riders. Bad movie but great cars and the co star a really hot blond who ended up being a stuntwomen on a lot of movies. Role model for the Jodie Banks character on the fall guy. O and this is the car i used to take to to the drive ins way back when

It was supposed to be a totaled car redone by a high school body shop class……. It’s better than anything we did in class lol 😂
