I feel silly asking this but is the foot rest on a 73 C3 with an auto transmission a switch? If so what the heck does it do? I'm a new owner and had to pull the carb right away to replace the gaskets or else I'd fire it up and see for myself. I can't find any information on it, but when I press the foot rest down I definitely can feel something click on and off underneath of it
Just out of curiosity, do you know how to drive a car with a manual transmission?
Have you ever heard the term “three on the tree”?
How do you start your Corvette when it is cold (first start of the day)?
I’m not trying to be a wise ***, just looking to see how much car knowledge has been lost through technology improvements. Thanks for playing!
Thanks for the reply. The other gentlemen was able to point out that it was a dimmer switch. Haven't been able to locate the clutch yet, that's the stompy thing right? I think I just stompy on it and wiggle the sticky stick to go vroom.

Whoa, you said you have an automatic. There is a reason you can’t find that pedal! Glad I could help!
Actually, when I got my ‘69 I didn’t know what the two switches were under the steering column and bitched that GM should have considered installing some manual way of opening the headlights and wiper door. Oops.
By the way, I took my drivers test in NY on a ‘68 Impala wagon with three on the tree. It’s actually making a sharp RIGHT turn while downshifting to second that is the challenge!
I miss the foot switch for high beams. I have a '54 F100 that has been nothing but a shell for who knows how many decades, and the foot switch still clicks. Don't know if it actually works, but I wouldn't be surprised...

That foot switch your referring to on an old ford truck could be starter, turn the key to run, pull the choke **** all the way out and hold it, pump the gas two times, step on that switch and she cranks.
They had foot starters that late? That would be a momentary switch, wouldn't it? It wouldn't be an on/off, which is what I think I remember the truck has. We have two Model As with foot start switches, but I thought by the fifties it would have been on the dash. I hope I can make it work with whatever engine I put in it. Anyhoo, back to Corvettes...
Our 1949 Ford flat head V8 had a push button starter on the left side of the dash. Our '56 Buick had the starter switch built into the accelerator pedal... made it easy to flood!
I remember those starter switches on the floor.

Not to forget the starter switch on the old 54 Studebaker Champion! It was under the GAS pedal!
Had to "Floor It" to start it! While a cool idea to set the choke, it set a very bad example for a young( at the time) and impressionable kid!
I haven't broken that "Floor It" habit since! I have however quit doing it on startup though! Still working on the rest of the story!
Had a friend with a 396 four speed. Got in trouble passing a car on a bridge and said he hit the switch "hard as hell" with his foot to pass, full throttle. Perfect shift he told me!
So I had a Mercedes Rental car over the July 4th weekend. Just chock a block full of millennial lazyness bliss.
No shifter, The 'wiper' is the shifter...you push the 'squirter' in to park. It has electric parking brakes. Took me 10 minutes to find the hood latch (curiousity) and I have 4 German Cars!
No wonder as soon as they're out of warrantee, they're almost worthless! WAY, WAY, WAY, too many silly 'gidgets'. Every time I passed a car in the inside lane it would beep and flash me. No wonder they're $75k (for a 4 cylinder mind you!) $65k worth of BS!

No tach tho!
I'm not old....I just hate 'lazy engineering'.

How about starter under the valley cover in a Japanese car, can't remember which. And just try to find the brake fluid in a BM'r!
There was a bunch of old chev vans (mid-late 60s) that had the "3 on the tree" and the guys would put 4 speeds in them and the stock shifter would work for the 1-4 gear H pattern but to get reverse you needed to put another rod on that came out under the drivers seat, put the tree shifter in "neutral" and then reach down and pull the other one out to get reverse, then kick it back in with your heel when done.... Once my dad had to move my brothers van and couldn't get the thing out of reverse so ended up backing it out onto the street and then a reverse U turn and back into the other side of the driveway so he could get his car out (as I recall he wasn't real happy about it)

I'm not sure about it but I think the V8's moved to a button on the dash, the 6 cylinders still had it on the floor till the late 50's
