12:1 CR could be bunk too. Do a compression test. If it blows more than about 220 then you got some high CR to worry about. Without knowing the cam it’s still a guess. But if the cam bleeds off enough compression at low rpm on a high CR engine then it could likely be tuned properly to avoid or at least minimize detonation. Rear gearing and stall ( if automatic) and weight will all make a difference too.

if the pistons are forged they will take some abuse. Hypers or cast pistons, forget about it, no detonation is the smart way to go.
