Anyone ever managed to find or persuade ACC or Al Knock to sell some carpet off the roll to do small jobs, rather than to have to buy a kit when you only need one piece or a small section?
Tell me about it.I spent a day going to every upholstery shop in my city trying to buy even a half-yard of carpet. Nobody stocks remnants any more (or, they keep them to make repairs/labor charges). Also, the shipping doubles the price of the carpet IF you find someone willing to order a yard for you....$70 for a sq. ft. of carpet after paying for 1 yard/shipping.
its for speaker grills and kick panels which have been cut to house bigger speakers. I can get the black replacement plastic part and paint it to match, but I'll need small pieces of carpet to finish correctly, and I'll be damned if I'm buying a carpet set just to cover the speaker grills and kicks...
Got to be a solution out there.... nothing on eBay for used parts at the moment.
I bought a set of red carpet from Wilcox, and a separate pair of black seat back covers (since my seats are red, I wanted the contrast). 80-82 are bound, so a bit pricey, but the unbound 78 set is $35-. Perhaps they will sell you unbound in 81 silver/gray.
Good idea on the seat backs - great way to source a small amount of carpet.
One question / observation though - it's stated that 80-82 are bound, yet mine aren't, my previous 80 from years ago that I bought from the original owner wasn't, and I can find plenty of pics on the web of original '80-'82s' without bound seat back carpets..... is this a case of factory inconsistency?
For example....

There were two factories in 81, as you know. My 80 (St Louis only) was otherwise very original, but had suffered an interior color conversion, so I can't really say what came in mine. I have bound carpet now.
If your seat back carpets are in need of replacement, perhaps use that carpet for the pieces you need, and upgrade to bound carpet on the seatbacks?
I vaguely remember a thread about this. NCRS might know, too.
Both my cars were St Louis cars, but that '82 would be BG?
I did the same thing you did last year. That's why I remembered the thread, and it was easy to find.
Originally, NOT bound (probably). Replacements, likely bound (my 79 had replacement carpet put in during a partial restoration, including bound seat backs).
So, not bound if it matters. Bound looks nicer, though. NCRS should know for certain.

Or maybe contact a nearby upholstery shop......back home in Mich, there was an outfit that did boat and aircraft interiors.....my Dad got his 32' coupe done there.....they gave him a roll of carpet for repairs later on.

Thanks - getting hold of grey carpet isn't the challenge, it's getting it in the correct colour, length of pile, density of pile and overall appearance to match what it came from the factory with, so replacement pieces blend in correctly - i.e the same stuff the vendors use to make up and sell the complete kits.
The seat back options looks to be the best bet so fart.
Have you tried to contact someone at ACC to see if they would sell you a yard (or an appropriately sized piece) of the correct color carpeting? Just 'Google' Auto Custom Carpets and use the 'Contact Us' feature.

I have bought carpet pieces from both Al Knoch and Corvette America. They both sell it by the square yard. Corvette America does not make their own carpet sets, they use ACC sets, but they stock rolls of carpet to use to make their door panels, rear storage compartment door sets, pre-assembled 78-82 console side panels, etc. Admittedly I've never ordered just carpet pieces from Knoch, but I have ordered a few custom interiors from them for resto mod builds, and they've always been happy to sell me a couple extra square yards of carpet to use to make up custom carpeted trunks on C1 build's.
If you haven't called them, forget email and pick up the phone and talk to someone. At Knoch, I would ask for Melanie, she's the sales manager. At Corvette America I would think any sales person would be able to help you. My rep is John Zubler, but I think he'll be out next week. The sales manager at Corvette America is named Mike (his last name escapes me at the moment), but you shouldn't need the sales manager there, as anyone in sales should be able to help you.
Heck, if you ask nice, they may even be willing to sell you just the speaker and kick panel pieces.

Noted and thanks - I'll try phoning next, e-mail is just easier with the UK time difference/ call cost.
