I have a base 71 350 that has been sitting a while. I’m pretty sure the fuel lines are empty from the carb to the tank. If I put gas in the tank, will the pump pull it all the way to the carb? Does the system need to be “primed?”
(Tank is new, so it’s been completely empty for months.)
The original style mechanical pump is a good puller. You should not have to prime but it wouldn't hurt to fill the carb so you don't have to go through an extended cranking period.
Cheer, Greg
I think I would put a few gallons in the tank. Try to jack-up the rear a tad.
Then disconnect to feed line at the pump, from the tank just long enough to get some flow into a bucket, reattach.
I would not allow the pumps diaphragm to operate dry very long. So yes, basically prime it.

You may get some syphoning from the tank, may not. Try it.

On the ground and level with a half tank of gas....pulling the supply line will yield a steady stream of fuel. If it doesn't, then you have a blockage (bad sock, collapsed hose at the sender, etc...).
