Hello everyone,
I when I bought my 78 corvette the steering column was taken apart. But I never could find out just why. One problem was the hazard light was stuck on. So maybe that was why.
However, the steering column feels loose and there is a good bit of play.
Is it normal to have such a loose steering column? Or will it go away when I put the column back together?
I agree - that seems sloppy and clunky. I bought a supposedly rebuilt TT column for early C3s that was either not rebuilt or done poorly - So I rebuilt it. It actually wasn't that bad. There some good detailed videos on YT but be sure and find one for late model specific C3 columns. I don't recall the exact year they changed from the early style to the late style but I'm sure yours is the late style.
I suspect over the years people often use the steering wheel for leverage as they enter/exit the car. A straight column may take this usage better but TT columns probably not and get loose over time...
It appears the 4 bowl support bolts are loose. A very common problem. Only bad thing is it takes a good bit of disassembly, have to remove the bearing housing to get to them but an easy fix nonetheless. See paper below. Picture on page 5 labeled test fit shows the support bolts referenced.
