Default Tech vs. General guidelines...

If we split into Tech/Performance and General for C3 threads where do you see the dividing line?

For example, a new C3 owner has a question about changing the oil. Is that General or Tech/Performance?

A thread about weatherstripping?

Some are obvious. Strange C3 sightings on Ebay, for example, would go to General. Putting in a new suspension would go to tech.

What are your thoughts on where the line would be drawn for C3 sections?

Precisely the reason I think this isn't the greatest idea. Too much gray area. Basically everyone is going to have to search/post in two different forums to get the information they're looking for.

IMO - I see 5 things you do with a Vette - buy, maintain, improve, sell & other. The buying and selling are already handled in another forum. That leaves maintaining, improving (upgrades) and other. Therefore, I'd have to say that any subject that is not maintenance or improvement goes into General.

- Weatherstripping is maintenance - maintenance/tech/perf
- Changing oil is maintenance - maintenance/tech/perf
- Ebay sightings - General
- engine questions maintenance/tech/perf
- road trips, etc. - General
- Surveys - General
- painting - maintenance/tech/perf
- suspension - maintenance/tech/perf
- basically, any how-to goes in maintenance/tech/perf
- Car laws - General
- photos of motorcycles with C3s, general
- Car shows - General
- Restoration - maintenance/tech/perf
- Purchase inspection questions - General

Gray area: Update threads on people's projects.

Seems like a general topic... but they usually evolve into tech type threads.....

Go look at the "other" Corvette forum on the net. They have a split C3 section and there is no definite division of topics.

I think Z-man summed it well.

Chumpzilla, threads morph all the time and in both directions and there will always be gray but getting the majority of the subject matter in one section or the other is still very useful.

i agree with the above with three stipulations...TIRES/WHEELS goes in general....
SPEAKERS/RADIOS goes in general
project update threads go in tech

Solving problems like this is why the moderators get paid the big bucks...

I'd say - if the intent of a thread on a person's update is to ask (or demonstrate) a technical question, then it's tech/maintenance. If it truly is just snapshots of the progress, then it is general in nature and goes to the General section.

i had a big thread on my project....HAD is the operative word here...it had a start and it had a logical end....anything more would be a new thread appropriately placed

If someone wants advice on which tires and wheels to buy, it's general. If they want to dicuss the finer points of backspacing, offset, and frame interference, its tech.

I would think the same guidelines that are currently being used for the C4/C5/C6 sections would be used here.

Threads about the new GrandTourismo game for exaple should be in 'general' .... there are two threads on page one about this game with more than 250 views (both together).... I posted a question about my oil pickup tube and it has only 54 views... obviously there is a high interest in general topics.....
I really enjoy the general stuff but I'm looking forward to see a separate section for tech only....

The above categories will not go over very well with the proponents
of "The Split". They do not want the "good" tech threads pushed off the first
page by posts about changing oil or weatherstripping. Same with paint.
IMO - all the catagories listed above as General are really OT.
Perhaps I am splitting hairs, and we should create a C3-OT section
for all the posts that aren't 100% pertaining to C3 Corvettes.
I enjoy these posts from time to time (the spider post), but they seem
to be the crux of the problem.

Don't get me wrong, as I like the way you grouped things above.
I just don't think this fits the idea that was put forth suggesting a split.

Not again!?!?! Yes...OK, you feel like you have to ask. Troy, I salute your adherence to the standard that I expect on CF. But let me pose a few possible posts:

Newbie: What tires do I want? I'd like some that grip well, but don't cost too much, should I go with BFG like many do, or should I get larger rims so I have a better selection?

>Troy...uhm...hmmm...where to put this one...gee...I suppose in both cause the Newbie needs to make a decision based on choices between general and high performance. Or, no wait! I've got it! We split the forum into hundreds of sections with each section representing a part on the car! Yes! The ultimate solution!

Veteran: Finally have the money for doing some maintenance on my engine...fix the oil leak at least, and maybe add something high perf. What should I do? I'd like to keep it looking stock, but want it to feel more like a vette than a vega.

>Troy...gee, this is a pickle. OK, oil leaks should go in maintenance, and his high perf. question should go in to high perf. On no...the Veteran will now have to post into two sections which will mean double work for my members and won't reduce the number of posts per section which is my original intent.

See my point? Splitting things up between maintenance and high perf. just isn't a good solution...it won't achieve what you want. Let me make a suggestions:

If you really really mean to (not saying you are a meany [though perhaps I am insinuating it] to do so) split our (uh...OK...your) C3 forum into pieces then please don't do a maintenance/high perf. We are driving corvette Stingrays and every bit of maintenance we do on it is equivalent to an Indy pit stop with nearly all the parts high perf.

If you have to:
Section A: Engine including spark plugs and distributor & ignition coil...everything that makes the engine run including the fuel system, fuel tank, fuel pump, oil, also exhaust since it effects the engine performance, etc., but not including electrical components like alternator or sending units, or cooling system which has a heart of it's own.
Section B: Transmission & drive train including U-bolts, differential, half-shafts, etc.
Section C: Electrical including fuses, alternator, battery, radio, etc.
Section D: Cooling system...this will have enough posts to keep it seperate.
Section E: Body exterior & interior, frame, seats, body work, paint, etc.
Section F: Tires, wheels, etc.
Section G: suspension including steering, shocks, etc.
Section H: Brakes...now that we have the car going fast let's make it stop...this should be the first thing, but hey...it's a vette...the only time we need to stop is to take on fuel cause the gas stations are too dumb to figure out how to fill us up on the move.

Now people can visit which section they are interested in and get replies from both a general maintenance standpoint and performance...which is what most of the posts ask about...decisions on which to go for. Even oil is a valid high perf. question cause there is racing oil to look into which cleans the engine much better than any other oil, but needs to be changed more often. Oh, and another section named ebay links, funny links, etc., but just have a sticky that says they need to post them in off-topic and don't set permissions for them to post in it.

I hope this is seriously considered before doing any splitting. Of course it would be nice if it wasn't split, but I see your point now that a post I make one day finds it's way to the second page after only a couple of hours. I still have not heard from anyone as to whether my signature can be seen.

The people that wanted the split will post in the new section. Those of us that liked it the way it was will tend to post everything in the "general" section. If one of my threads is deemed "technical" and is moved I will get pissed and sulk for a few days. That's pretty much how I see it "working".... or not working.
