I don't understand the reason for the initial clearance problem. The thickness needed of the flywheel center is determined by the type and spring weight of the clutch and pressure plate.
When you dump a big clutch the forward bending force on the center of the flywheel is terrific. This bending force leads to hair line fractures in the bolt area. Just last week I saw a race car that had actually ripped the center out of the fly wheel.
It tore up lot’s of things, but it didn’t need a scatter shield because it still had the outer pressure surface intact.
