Default What engine do I have ?

Just bought a 79 L82 Vette with very clouded history VIN # 1Z8749S442379. My biggest problem right now is trying to figure out what engine I have. The engine number from the driver side rear, by the bell housing is 140 0207 (there is a space between the 140 and the 0207). IF the number was 14010204 it would be a 80 to 85 4 bolt 350 out of a light truck, but there is NOT a 1 between the two numbers. I am even more confused by the heads, the only numbers I can find is upside down 413 which is under the rocked arm assemble between # 1 and 3 cylinder and 9 between 5 and 8 cylinders. The plugs are angled downwards and towards each other. I have looked on several web sites and ask the local gear heads and Chevy parts guys with out any answers. You guys are my last hope

Is there a number on the pad in front of the passenger-side head?

I don't know about the block, but if my memory serves me correct I think you have an early set of GM performance 2.02 slant plug heads. For the time they were the best GM had, but todays Vortecs are better.

Almost all '79s used block #3970010; some very late production cars used #14016379; stock heads are #462624.

The only early angle plug 2.02 heads were the 292 turbo heads that were never used in production. Sounds like aftermarket to me.

Hi S,
It appears that Jim W hasn't visited this site since August 8th, 2005.
So he may not see your post.
Maybe an e-mail?

I believe you have the 80-85 truck 350 and the "1" in the casting number is not visible due to casting anomaly......not uncommon on GM blocks to have missing or faint number on the pad as well as other places.

There's a few threads here on CF regarding this block.

-Dipstick on the passenger side, right?

CF Lore says that there was a 4 bolt version and a 2 bolt version of the 0207 block.

I found some more internet lore that says that the 0207 blocks are a bit lighter/ thinner and more crack-prone and mark the switch to the made in Mexico blocks.

My 1980 block (L48, numbers matching, factory manual) is block code 14010207. Passenger-side dipstick as Adam said (I thought it was a year thing, as my 79 has it on the drivers side). Now I'll have to stick my borescope in the oil pan and see if I have 2 bolts or 4.
