Great Fabrication work. I just have a few questions...

The oil tank... what is the purpose of having 2.5 gallons of oil and an a oil cooler? Are you racing or is it for the turbos? Just asking, not Criticising. Nice set up with the lines and all....

The frame work for the instument panel... the pic you have of where it almost touches the seat.... it "appears" to me that you could cut your angle back in closer to allow more room for seat.

Really good stuff... thanks for sharing.

It's a dry sump system and it allows me to run a seperate feed to the turbos, dial in the pressure, dial in the flow through the cooler so I can alter the temperature without having to board up stuff.

I changed the panel angle, it sits a lot further forward now but it was just near the knees in the old position.

Not all race seats are uncomfortable, the Evo2 in particular is very nice. I'm 6'1", 180lbs, 32" waist. I find the hip and shoulder support of a race seat very comfortable. Clinging to the wheel does you no good, street or track! One of those marginally upholstered sheet aluminum deals may be a completely different story.

TT, our Swift DB-2 Sports 2000 cars have the drysump tanks in a cast section of the gearbox, near the inboard rear springs. I'm sure you can find somewhere to stick it ;-)

-Chris

edit:

I imagine the Evo2 would be to sport-compact for you too (although I've seen them and similar in everything from BMW lightweight M3 to Alfa Duetto to Mustang).

As to the steering wheels, I'm not talking about nitrous buttons and colored carbon fiber. Something like this just screams competition car to me:

Okay, so that one has buttons, but picture it without.
This is mine:

Not super-vintagey, but neither is twin turbochargers and tilt front. Either way, far from being Mr. Diesel.

Honestly I don't like anyone of those steering wheels, the lower one looks best of those 2 but the flat bottom doesn't do it for me. I'd swap to a nascar style one w/ a cushion in the center before contamplating something like that, i like the stock steering wheel and the grant wheel I have also. As for the dry sump tank, seriously this is the only location where it will fit, can't think of any other space. I could fab a tank out of sheet aluminium but it will never have the de-aeration properties of a round & tall tank.

The flip front is there not for being modern or something but for ease of working on the car, I could have also done a completely removable front w/ d-zus fasteners. Twin turbos is pretty old school, in the 80s there were race vettes that had it, one of them was a twin turbo kinsler fuel injected one w/ low mounted off axial divided housing turbos.

As for lateral support, the kirkeys have plenty of that, I value lateral support also. I also want the seat closer to the floor pan, I need some more head room in this thing, I used to drive w/ the tops w/ the headliner removed. This is the seat I'm probably going to use

I want my car to look like an 80s race car.

Good looking race seat but nothing I would consider for the street. I wonder if it is too tall?? Even mounted to the floor it might hit the roof. Certainly won't be comfortable for a long drive.
I actually like the steering wheels and while I have the stock one seeing those has got me thinking.

litevette has them so they fit, I don't do long drives and they will be plenty comfortable for me, I've driven w/ worse seats like that (roch hard kevlar seats in a go kart, no suspension at all)

Hey norval, it's got holes. As far as I know you've only added one hole to your stock seat for the harness!

I guess when I think 80's racing I think sports racing cars not Vettes. Didn't know about the twin turbo Vettes, either way I was just kidding about conections to tFatF.

Keep doin what you're doin and keep us updated

Chris you are way way off there. There are dozens of holes in my seat, almost missing alot of parts. I cut the weight down alot.
The side hinge bars that go up inside the seat are drilled full of holes and cut short.

TT during your research of your seats did you look at these by any chance?

I, like you am concerned with the head room and was wondering how much difference there was between the two seats if you had looked both of them. I wouldn't mind running a seat like yours but it will be a little uncomfortable for the wife. I understand we are doing two different things as my car leans more toward pro-street with as much race stuff as practical. While to me yours is more toward full on kick *** put it on the street only if you got the gonads. Also the above seat you showed, did it come with the holes in it or did you lighten it up some?

What kind of seat is that leather one? Looks nice. The seat pictured in my post is a kirkey ultra light seat, I don't have the seats yet and with the holes is how they come from kirkey.

The flanged holes add stiffness I'm sure, while also removing weight.

They are seats from summit. They also come in black with a red insert. For 220 a piece with sliders I don't think they're a bad deal. The other thing is they tilt back so they should give a little more comfort/head-room as well. Here's the links:

Ok, let's start over. What are you building again?

It's been a while since you started. Is it full on race, show car, or daily driver. I like the race seat, but other than pulling out of the driveway and washing it that would be the most I would drive it. With your welding skills, why not just build what you want and have it covered the way you want.

The interior will look cool with the kegarator in the back. Are you going to plexi it off to kill some of the heat from the oil?

Sketch up what you think the interior will look like and scan it. Or cut and paste some photos for us.

It'll be sort of a full race car for on the street, borderline legal. Building a seat from sheet aluminium is a lot of work, add the cost of filler rods, gas, greenlee punches & flares and you're into it way more than those seats cost and the result won't be near as nice.

I'm going to put some sheeting in the back to cover the whole trunk area. A sketch...hmmm...time to grab a pencil

Not sure, but shoulder belts may work better at a 10 degree angle above your shoulders running back to cage....read that somewhere..and as you say,you have adjustment to play with...

I didn't mean build the same thing, just a frame to cover with better padding. In Texas we call those seat barbecue grills. After that sat in the 105 degree sun for an hour, it would burn off the first couple of layer of skin.

Make sure to put in some plexi, so you you can see back in there. That is the coolest part of the GT40.

It's never that hot here so I'm not worried about that.

why plexi? There's not much to see there apart from a floor, a tank and some hoses.

rihwoods, the belts should mount at a 10 degree angle below the shoulder:

You may want to check out a set of Jaz Seats.
I ordered mine from Summit with a special color cover and added foam inserts.

It's been a while but I think they only weighed 7 pounds each. Someone may be able to post a pic.

Also, my door bars fit with the factory door panels and the Jaz seats.

Nice work on the cage. You still have room for a NOS bottle back there in case it's not fast enough for you.
