Default Speedometer cable replacement

I need to replace the speedometer cable on my 78. The one from the dash to the cruse control unit. In my Chiltons manual it says you must remove the entire center console to access the dash cluster. Is this correct.? It looks like you should be able to lower the steering columm and remove the dash cluster. Anyone done this before ? Thanks

Is there some reason why you want to remove the cluster..? If you need to replace the speedo cable, just pop the cable out and install the new one. Pop the under-dash panels off and do it one-handed. You'll need a box of BandAids by the time you're done.

Both are correct. You don't need to remove much, but you will bleed some.

On my 81, all I had to do was disconnect the cable at the back of the speedometer ,there is a loop retainer around it. Press the loop towards the back of the car and pull the cable off, forwards. The i pulled it out from the engine compartment. Push the new one in from the compartment; connect to the back of the speedo and then connect to the transducer.

A little pain and contortions and you're done.

Are you sure the problem is your cable and not the transducer? Cables are resilient and transducers aren't.

hey i was changing lightbulbs in my dash and managed to knock off the speedo cable. That loop retainer mentioned above, can someone tell me which way it goes? Does is go on the speedo shaft and the cable goes into it?
