Not tryin to be a smart a$% or anything here, but you DO realize that "Pointing to #1" refers to the #1 plug wire position on the dist cap and NOT to the No 1 Cylender right?
Just to be sure, did the car run with distributor in it before? I don't know which is new the manifold or the distributor? If the distributor is new try running the old one? Maybe there is something wrong with teh distributor(If it's new)?

I may be wrong, but I think that if you set #1 cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke, that the rotor should point in the general direction of the #1 cylinder. Yes, you can put it anywhere, but that is how the wire set is cut. You can then set your disrtributor base so that you have room to advance or retard it as needed. Put the #1 wire on the # 1 tower. Use the timing light to set the timing. Also, are you sure that you have the firing order right? You may want to double check.

Yes the car did run with the distributor before, but not well. I pulled the cap off at #1 cylinder TDC and the rotor was past the number one plug terminal. So I assumed that it was off and that's why I decided to start over from square one.
---The motor would backfire under minimal load while driving and the engine would cut out at 3K like I had hit a rev limiter. I had similar experiences the first time that I had installed the dist incorrectly which is why I assumed...

I do realize that, but that's a common mistake. Thanks for asking.
I bugged Lars today and he suggested that I square off the dist, and set the rotor at 12-16 BTDC. I'll do that tomorrow and report back, I won't be home today till 10pm.

What is new and what did you do to the motor prior to starting it up this time ?...and when it fired did you move the distributor around to get it to run better ?
This is where it helps to have two people. It's dying because you need to the turn the distributor after it fires and adjust the timing quickly. Just loosen up the distrib. bolt and get ready to twist it after it fires off. (BTW....you don't have to twist it very much at all to make a difference.) Now once you get it running on a stable idle by "ear tuning", put the timing light on it, and adjust your idle.

The only thing that is new to the motor is the dist and the Vic Jr, the Demon has been on for about 50 miles. With the dist how it was I set the base timing at 14 BTDC, it prob wanted more but I wanted to be safe till I get it dyno tuned.
How old is your balancer? I wonder if the ring is slipping, giving you a false reading. That might explain why it ran so poorly with the old distributor, too.

And it ran like crap before you changed these parts too ?

Thought did cross my mind, the balancer is about three years old, but it has lived on two motors. It's prob an AC Delco one, got it from Corvette Mikes.

I had major fuel problems at first with the Demon, way too rich. I swapped out a few things and made it better, I think my only problem now is the timing. I also had an intake manifold leak before, that's why I put on the Victor Jr.
