If you have kids, just blame it on one of them. Looks like a great time to go ahead and add the aluminum heads. Summit offers their private label alum head complete for about a grand. Sure beats paying for another set of iron ones.
I had that happen to me on a 350 I had in my 68 Firebird. The block cracked along the cylinder wall from top to bottom. Damn carb studs. To this day I get the chills if a carb stud is loose.
I feel your pain. you need to check the rod and the crank in addition to making sure the block is ok.
carb studs. Is that why they come with bolts from the factory? Didn't know a stud could drop through the manifold.
Gravity, vibrations and 30 LBs of vacuum are pretty big forces to combat.
Try holding your hand on an intake port when you crank a motor over.
It will suck the blood right to the surface!
You're lucky you weren't rapping it up to 8 grand when it happened. I've seen drag motor blow apart from alot less. Check your valves and seats as well. It may have bent one or scarred the seat. I can't tell from the pic.
Looks like a carb stud that fell into the manifold and went through the valve.
Don't feel bad. I had the carb stud break and do the same thing on a 1 month old, newly rebuilt ZZ3. In addition to the damage you show, it split the block open (got wedged between the piston and cylinder wall) and irrepairably warped my newly ported cylinder heads.
I talked with speedway motors. Told me if I wanted to race this weekend then go ahead and smooth out the sharp edges. However, I'm going to order a new piston. I measured the the piston TDC and still have .006 same as the others. But I'm still going to put a new bearing in. The head I'll pick up another at the bone yard and work my magic on it. I'm just glad I don't have to send the whole assembly out for rebalancing or worse replace the assembly and block. I got lucky with this one.
I have had in the past after a few too many of
I don't have any of until both the doors are locked and the keys are on the coffee table...trust me, you're not bubba...s##t happens...
Hope it all works out for ya...
