Default Quadrajet Question

Hi All
I have the ID sheet for the Q-J but I see alot of numbers posted wit a suffix #... Example 7029215 then EH

We se this is a 1969/49 state/Chevrolet/Manual transmission..
But what does the EH stand for and where can I find some kind of index for this suffix?

Im involved in a desperate search for a Q-J for my 73 L48 and I am trying to figure out exactly which carbs will work

Thanks
Bob

Looked through all of My reference books but came up dry as to
meaning of suffix. Not one of them even mentions any kind of suffix.
This may be a question only Lars can answer.

A small block quadrajet with 73-74 main jets, 44 main rods and DA secondary rods should get you in the ball park. God bless, Sensei

Any q-jet that starts with a 7 and not a 1 will work. You can get the rods and jets from Edelbrock or carburetion.com and tune as necessary.

I was wondering why After I put my jets/primary and secondary rods from my original 73 (the ball valve hole is stripped in the float bowl) in a 1978 QJ it ran like crap.

Thank you very much Lars

the EH suffix and the carb# indicate it is for a 427/390 engine, 1969 4spd (L-36). Might fetch a decent sum on ebay from a bigblock owner.

According to the Corvette by the numbers book, the 7029215 is a 69 427/390 4 speed carb. Also, the book says "The 2 or 3 letters that usually follow the stamping numbers designate the code Chevrolet assigned to that carburetor. There are no records to indicate which letter codes corresponded to specific plants. The correlation to the actual carburetor application to this code is the same code as shown on the car's original assembly line sheet".

It may be worth alot of money to someone looking for a period correct carb.

carb #s and those letter codes are listed in the NCRS tech spec and judging guide for 68/69.

also a good website for carb#s is:

http://www.blake.com/oemcarbs/partlist.htm

Is that the carb you have, or was that just a "for example"?

The 73 parts do not interchange with the '78 parts - you cannot swap the components (rods are different lengths and jetting requirements are completely different).

Thanks Lars
I found a guy (Someone I went to school with) with quite a few Q-J's from 68-74
I will be meeting with him this evening
He said $100 for a working carb and $300 if i want one completely rebuilt.
Im not sure what to look for other than the correct serial# ..the correct secondary rods..DA I believe, And worn throttle plate shafts..... If you read this thread within the next couple hours maybe you can give me a few pointers before I go and open my wallet
Thank you for setting me on the right path

You know you can get most of the parts for the pre-75 q-jets new from Edelbrock.

Good to know
I only have Q-J's in rebuildable condition from 1978
My original 73 has a stripped hole where the check ball (or whatever its called) screws in.

You can get parts for the 4ME (post-75 q-jets) but the primary metering rods are incredibly tough to find in the right size. You can go on ebay motors and search "metering rods" and JJ's Smoking Deals may have a few left. You want any of them that are below 50 and end with the letters p or k. These have the correct sized power tip and are ideal for corvettes. Jets are easily found and a dime a dozen.

I'm currently using an Edelbrock 1904 (4ME type) and it was tuned by lars. I recently changed the primary rods to 47k and am using 75 primary jets. It works great on my '81 that's computerless.
