Yes, that red wire on the lower left hand side of the CS144 connected to the S terminal needs to connect to the Batt lug of same. That is, connect a wire bettween the two so they become connected to each other.
The white wire from the "original plug" connects to the L terminal of the CS144.
The "original red going to batt terminal on 63Amp alt" connects to the batt lug of the CS144.
So...to get this straight. The red wire coming off the CS144 connector marked "S" goes to the CS144 "Bat" Terminal as well as the "original" red "Bat" terminal wire shown in the diagram. So the red wire in my original plug goes nowhere, correct?
And then the "L" terminal from the CS144 plug goes to the white wire in my original 2 wire plug...

Yes I think your saying the same thing. The end of that red wire coming out of the new CS144 plug connects to the batt lug of the CS144.
Your other statements look correct.
Your original red wire in that SI plug goes nowhere, just insulate the end and fold it up out of the way.
Okay, now. My car is a 1977. My original SI plug has two wires, but instead of a white/red combo, I have a large red and a small brown. According the updated drawing, which of my two, the red or the brown, go to the CS plug L, or brown on the CS adapter?

Well I can't be sure about your car since it has a gen light and it's probably wired differently. I'd have to see a schematic of your charging system.

Well, like I said I ordered an adapter plug from an online company. It came with only one wire, and the female SI plug and a male CS plug. The way they have it setup, supposedly for my car with a GEN light, is the small brown wire to 'L' which is brown.

Then your just lacking the wire from the S terminal to the batt lug. Once you make that connection it should work.

Okay, so in my case the brown wire takes the place of the white wire, and the large red wire is NOT used from the SI plus, and I have to jump a wire from the 'S' to the batt post. Cool.

Sorry I missed all this excitement! I was at a local Sat. nite car show. It seems as though shafrs3 has explained everything! The only thing I might add is that you need to use 8 guage wire for the batt. lug to your old harness for safety. The other thing is that I was told by the guys that rebuilt my CS144 is that it has a self sensing system built into the regulator and does not need the sensing wire. I will hook mine up with that wire not connected first. Then, if it doesn't work, I will do as Shafer suggests and attach it to the batt. lug. Let us know how it works!

I won't install mine until this winter when I pull the engine. I have several things I want to do and pulling the engine will make the processes much easier. I'm afraid the "while I'm at its" are really going to bite me hard this winter! Oh well, it's only money or lack of it that will dictate how much I get done!

Be careful you don't spend beer money on parts. You need to make sur eyou have some cold ones to keep you warm on those late nights in the garage.
I just bought a few more CS adapters at Autozone, and will use the SI plug I ordered to make a 3-wire connection. That should do the trick huh?
Well, mine still shows it isn't charging. A fellow forum member is gonna help me troubleshoot today. Starting with remounting the old 63A alt that I know was charging, it just wasn't keeping up with the amp draw of the Mark VIII fan and headlights. Wonder if I should just try it as Benie stated with no "sensing" wire connected. Only the 2 batt lug wires? Who the heck knows at this point. I gotta say a big thanks to shafrs3 for going out of his way to help me on this one. Will let ya know what I find
