Well....if you've got alt's burning up, that "MIGHT" be your problem
It's gotta be a voltage regulator to get so hot it bursts into flames, or you crossed some wires someplace, or grounded a wire....what year is the car? If it's an internal voltage reg, an alt swap will fix it....if an outside voltage reg, you better swap it too..
Went back to first post....a 76 has internal reg.....make sure there isn't any wires grounded or touching copper together....
Having same problem w/my '76... but no fires. Have put the quick disconnect on but haven't researched as to where the problem is yet but it continues. Will look at it after we're done with other repairs that have to be done - replaced the alternator, starter and power steering pump. I do have an intermittent prob. with the wipers so I will check into that.

Must be inherent....my wipers are still doing the intermitent thing...I wiggle the connector and they work for a while....there is a copper tab going into the wiper motor on the hot pin that seems to be the problem...I may pull the whole thing to find and solder the loosey...
taking a rbeak from it before I finish the job the alt. tried to do. Working on it tomorrow with a friend who's a mech. He'll make sure I didn't screw it up. Should of done this first.
Thanks for all the help. Will post progress when done. Wish me luck
IT'S FIXED!!!!!
Thanks for all your help.
I got the meter and pulled all the fuses. Hovered around 4.3 amps. I decided to unplug the alt. and it dropped dramaticly. Turned out that there was connection unplugged in the alt. wire. Plugged it in and it read normal.
You guys are great
After replacing the alternator, which was pulling 14 amps, I was still having problems with the battery draining. A friend said they'd seen an occasional starter do this. The starter was giving me intermitent problems so it was also replaced 2 wks ago. After I read this forum and since the starter was the last thing installed, I left the battery power on overnight. The next day, the battery was fine. Full power. Glad that's one issue gone!
