Those were a bad copy of the early Borg-Warner that Rambler/AMC used, among others. Figures they'd copy that one. I laugh every time a customer brings that junk to me with no forward gears, because all you have to do to waste the forward clutch is rev it in neutral/park for about 30 seconds to a minute. Their design does not provide lube to that clutch unless it's in gear! Total junk, plus they were able to pawn it off on Volvo and Peugoet as well.

I've seen L81 w/ forged but it must have been because the shelf for the 4 valve relief ones was empty, however ALL L83s do have forged pistons, they use the L82 piston, TRW # 464664

Hans
You are talking about the earlier one which did give trouble in my 635csi - the next "switchable" box, did not have this problem, but that does not change my question - what are the losses...........

I've had a forged piston fail once. I dropped an exhaust valve head on top of it at about 7500 rpm, apparently on end from the marks, tried to force the piston out the side of the cylinder from the crack and bent metal in the wall, and then must have shot the valve head back up through the exhaust port and out the headers.

Darn piston failed. It had a hole in the top of it.

Think TRW will give me my money back?

General wisdom on this forum used to put losses at somewhere around 25-30% from the crank to the wheels when pushed through an auto.
