Yes, I had troubles with my old boat anchor, and finally switched it out for a cheapy AZ rebuilt....I have a staggered bolt mounting so the starter is a bit harder to find than an inline mounting bolt pattern....dunno even why the change....168 tooth wheel...

I'm using the Summit SUM-820323. It works and fits great.

I'm a little confused about the price on mini-starters, they range from $60 to $300 or more. Are you paying for the name or difference in quality.

I just picked up a new one an hour ago. It was recommended that I went with the TCI They have never had a problem/complaint with them. It was $259 CDN
My last mini starter was a no name and it lasted a few years but was feeling tired so I bought a new one while I was at it.
I did have to rotate it to clear the block. They are adjustable as to solenoid location but only the center location fit my Merlin block.

Norval...you have a high compression motor right? Could that have had anything to do with the short life of your last mini starter?

I bought one off E-bay and have been using it for four years now with no problems.

I think it was around $130 but I don't remember the sellers name.

I have a high torque mini on the 69 427 high compression vert. Probably running just shy of 12:1. NO problems and its been 3 years. It does have FI on it so it starts with very little cranking.

I had a GM Performance Parts high-torque mini #12361146 on my 350 HO crate for 5 years. It works great and I haven't had to touch it since I installed it.

GMPP's description:
This gear reduction starter is designed for 1958-1996 V-8 and all 90? V-6 engines. It has a compact design that provides increased clearance, weighs only 10. 5 pounds and has a gear reduction of 3. 75:1. It is equipped with a dual bolt pattern for 12. 75" (153-tooth) and 14" (168-tooth) flywheels, and the housing can be rotated to clear exhaust systems. Kit includes starter, mounting bolts, shims, gaskets, and electrical connectors.

I am looking for one of these as well. I just got a Hitachi for my 75 w/ manual transmission, but it doesnt fit. idk why but supposedly it has to do something with the fact that its a manual. the shop said something about its hard to find one for a manual despite the fact that it says it works for a manual on the box.....

one difference is probably the HP of the starter motor itself....

I was having all kinds of starting problems with my small block until I installed a powermaster 180. It seems to have cured the problems.

Wow that's a lot of coin. I'd be comfortable paying half that considering how little I get to drive the car, and how it'll be fuel injected and will crank a lot less.

I ordered one from Amazon for $83 after $20 discount but it has been back-ordered for a while.

Quality-Built 6449MSN Supreme Domestic Starter - New

http://www.quality-built.com

It is a remake of the starters gm used in trucks from 1996 to 2002. From comparing pictures, it looks like the gmpp bb502 starter that others are using.

It is the last component (I hope) that I need to install the TKO-600 auto to manual kit from Keisler.
