It is a remake of the starters gm used in trucks from 1996 to 2002. From comparing pictures, it looks like the gmpp bb502 starter that others are using.
It is the last component (I hope) that I need to install the TKO-600 auto to manual kit from Keisler.
it doesnt say that that one works with a chevy from the c3 generation
Guys:
Just so you know, I have been following this thread and taking notes on starter part numbers that you all have listed. I understand that some of you out there with our kits were not told of the need to swap the starter(auto to manual swaps). I will pass the part numbers along to the sales staff so they can inform potential future customers of the need and provide them a part number as well. Thank you.

I have the Summit mini starter 153 or 168 flywheel. I've had it for 5 years now on several variations of 383's and my 427 small block. It just zings the motor with 222 ft-lbs and 4:1 gear reduction. It's made for 18:1 500 ci race motors
#SUM-820323 I think it's @ $150. I'm not sure because I had enough points that they threw it and something else in free when I was down at the Summit store

Is that starter a staggered or straight bolt pattern??
I had a GM Performance Parts high-torque mini #12361146 on my 350 HO crate for 5 years. It works great and I haven't had to touch it since I installed it.
GMPP's description:
This gear reduction starter is designed for 1958-1996 V-8 and all 90? V-6 engines. It has a compact design that provides increased clearance, weighs only 10. 5 pounds and has a gear reduction of 3. 75:1. It is equipped with a dual bolt pattern for 12. 75" (153-tooth) and 14" (168-tooth) flywheels, and the housing can be rotated to clear exhaust systems. Kit includes starter, mounting bolts, shims, gaskets, and electrical connectors.

Racecar cranking power.
Summit's lightweight Nippondenso-type Protorque starters offer a 4.0:1 gear-reduction ratio and a whopping 1.9 HP. That's 222 ft.-lbs of racecar cranking power. If that's not enough, there are even more powerful 3.1 HP monsters, which are a pound lighter! They have a 4.44:1 reduction ratio and churn out an awesome 342 ft.-lbs. of torque. Both of these powerhouses are suitable for engines up to 502 c.i.d., and compression ratios of up to 18.0:1. GM versions are adjustable for four mounting positions; Ford types, for 18. A gold dichromate finish prevents corrosion and electrical shorts on both.
my older 168 flex setup with a 9.5 inch 3800 stall torque converter
GMPP #9000852 fits 168 tooth flywheel both small & big blocks. $229 at Scoggin Dickey- very good starter.
This is GM`s answer for a light weight starter. Your best bet over any aftermarket high dollar trick stuff. The Canadian cost is too high, but in the USA available at nearly any auto parts store for less than a 1/3.
as I listen to this thread, I am thinking I will have to re-assess my 'mini-starter'. I just got it from an old 383 and thought I would use it. Will find out what kind it is and compare with ya'll's input.
After going through several rebuilts from advance auto parts (lifetime warranty, but who wants to replace the starter every 6 months!), I got a mini off ebay. I think the seller was skip white. It was dirt cheap and has given me no problems for several years now. My stock starter was staggered bolt, the mini is straight bolt but it fit fine. The only problem is that it sounds like a Dodge (I swear!). God bless, Sensei

Yes, you have the two verticle block holes for using 153 or 168 tooth. The 4 horizontal holes are to rotate the starter for block or more header clearance

ample header to starter clearance - mine is rotated with the four hole against the block just how I pulled it out of the box. You can even see the block saver plate between the starter and red bell H.
