The best axle lube combination I ever came up with was a light wipe of sewing machine oil on each axle (just a wipe, not wet) followed by a very light spray of silicon lube. The silicon just floats on the oil film...hardly any drag. It's only good for 1 or 2 runs before a redo, though. Have fun!!!
Those are good times My son liked my Zr1 so much he made one as his derby car ...I helped him out on mixing the paint/clear coat its the real Quazar blue I had after painting my forced air kit. He did spray it himself as I watched. It won best paint and second place overall. I think the first place car was running NOS
The first one I made, I used 1/4" dia lead rods, drilled and fit into the rear end for added weight and looked like exhaust. If it was too heavy, they were easily pulled out and shaved with a pocket knife. The wheel (treads) were polished and graphite was used on the polished nails for minimum friction.
My dad made an old looking truck with wood in the bed that hid a battery and a switch. It had working headlights.
Here is the final product I did the cutting and shaping and he did the paint and stickers. Lots of little things were learned along the way that I will apply to next year, but it was fun.
Thanks for the tips! We weigh the car and turn it in tomorrow night and race on Saturday.
