Is there a possibility an engine tap I have is just a valve adjustment needed on my break-in or something more serious...My mech, is out of town for a week n I wish to know if by driving her I will cause any damage or not....I aslo noticed that the tap is more noticeable on start up n seems to come n go....Or is that my ear playing wishfull thinking..lol...........Thanx ....Jerrylee///
Hydraulic or mechanical lifters? If mechanical, pull the valve cover and see if you can locate the offending lifter (if it is a lifter)...then adjust it. If hydraulic lifters, and if they were adjusted properly, you shouldn't be having this problem.........unless you are low on oil.
It's hydraulic flat tappet here....n my oil is good......I did have a problem with my timing where she was pinging alot... could something have happened there....Thanx...Jerrylee///

If it's on the passenger side of the motor it could even be the fuel pump making the noise. Happened to me not too long ago. Sounds just like a lifter but it was the fuel pump. See if you can isolate it.
Jerrylee, I have an XE and the same thing happened. Yes, it could be the fuel pump rod, but more likely, the rockers may need a little more adjustment. Yes, in an ideal world, you set them up once and never touch them again, but after a short time, a couple of mine started tapping. I took off the valve covers, started it up and listened with a mechanic's stethescope (these are cheap at any parts store, everyone should have one) and tightened the offending ones about a quarter turn. I think I had to do this a couple of times, but it's been over a year and no problems since. God bless, Sensei
P.S. I think Lucas Oil Stabilizer is a good idea these days.
