I have a small block 350 and i want to change out the stock timing chain for a Zoom adjustable. I dont know how to do this. I am afraid to do it because I do not want to mess anything up. I do not know if there is any way that I should do this or steps that i should take is there anything to do with top dead center? will the cam roll wehn i take the chain off? How do I keep the cam and the crank lined up? I want to advance teh timing 4 degrees but there is 2 slots to put it in. Which do i use? The engine is out of oth car if that matters. Thank you for your help i want to get the engine back in the car for next friday and this is the only thing holding me back
Thank you Marc
Line the motor up so the mark on the timing chain gear and crank gear point to each other. Remove the cam gear bolts. Pull the cam gear off and put the new chain on the gears and slide them back on.
Check out corvettefaq.com and look at the cam replacement article.
Don't forget the harmonic balancer puller and you also need a tool to reinstall the harmonic balancer (not sure what though, I am in the entertaining stage of doing a timing belt change myself :D ). Also, if you are going to take all that off, you might as well put a new water pump, and maybe even a new fan clutch.

I have a paper on the faq section about timing chain replacement. This has specific instructions for the fuel injected C4 Vettes, but the basic technique (once you get past the F.I. specific stuff) applies to any small block Chevy. Check it out, and contact me if you need any help (or if you need a copy of the paper).
