Default TH 350 problem!!

I started the car today after about a month, car started okay but theres a problem with the transmission, car won't move in any gear position. What are the common problems that can cause this? I have checked the oil level & thats okay.

Thanks Neil.

Dumb question is there enough fluid in the transmission? I would first jack the car up and make sure the shift cable is operating the shift lever on the transmission. After that I would drop the pan to see if your filter is clogged. If all checks alright either the oil pump crapped out or the torque converter is bad.

Thanks Neil.

Will it start in either 1st gear or reverse? Will it shift at all or just not up shift out of first?

I had this same problem, where the vacuum tube at the modulator under the car had cracked, and the vacuum was all leaking out. It's a metal line that goes from the manifold to the modulator on the passenger side of the Vette.

If that vacuum line leaks it will not shift.

Thanks guys, Yes I checked the fluid level, still plenty of oil. I will look into the modulator vacuum line. Just looking for common problems to check before I drop the oil pan. Not even sure i know where the oil pump is in the tranny.

The oil pump is internal it is mounted behind the torque converter. The transmission must be removed to inspect the pump. Does the fluid smell burnt or super dark colored almost like motor oil?

You DID check the tranny oil level with the engine running.(?) If not...the oil level is low and there won't be enough oil to charge the pump/lines.

Yes the engine was running & up to temperature when I checked the level.
I only changed the oil & filter about 6 months ago & it still looks clean on the dip stick.

My guess for your problem is that something in the pressure regulator system within the transmission is damaged. If the governor was stuck, you would not shift ranges when moving....but the governor would not keep it from shifting from forward ranges to reverse. You are sure that you hooked up the shift linkage properly (from your shifter). [I doubt that you even had it off.] Sounds like it needs to be removed and overhauled.

There is one last possiblility. Are you absolutely certain that the filter element and the oil pickup tube were installed correctly (with attachment bolt torqued to spec)? If that bolt worked loose and the oil pickup tube fell out of place (or is sucking air), you would get similar symptoms. You might drop the pan and check that before you take it to the shop. It could happen....

Thanks for all the advice, I replaced the oil & filter at least 6 months ago & drove the car to work for a couple of weeks. I have parked the car & used it on & off since then with no problems, until this last weekend where as i mentioned the car has been sitting for about a month & will not move forward or reverse. I was just looking for common problems before I drop the oil pan. The vacuum lines to the modulator look okay, so it looks like I will have to drop the pan this weekend. Hopefully it's something obvious.

Neil.

Auto trans don't normally just stop working because they sit for a month....obviously, you don't see a pool of fluid under the car or you would have mentioned it...I would drop the pan and check for disconnected pickup tube....sounds like there is plenty of fluid, it just isn't making it to the pump...
My 2 cents...
