Polishing crank
Do I need to take my crank to a "professional" grind shop to get it polished? I'm not getting it ground.... just polished. The bearings all have some wear (grooves) from a cam lobe being wiped. But the crank seems to be okay and I have been told that it just needs polishing. How important is it to take it to a VERY reputable shop? Or is the local shop with the right equipment enuf? I will be talking to the small local shop tomorrow and I'm sure he will say he can do it (more business for him). If not him then I have to ship it several hundred miles away. Any and all opinions needed.... Thanx.

If the bearing journals have "grooves" large enough for your fingernail to feel, you really need to get the journals re-ground. If you just polish and put new bearings on "grooved/distressed" journals, you will be asking for more problems. I can't imagine the cost savings from not doing a re-grind being worth the risk.

Have you had the crank checked to make sure it's within limits?
It only takes a shop about 10 minutes to polish a crank. Any shop with the equipment can do this. The last one I had done cost $15.
