Default opinion on 68

I'm looking at a 68 and was wondering what a fair price would be. I dont know the C-3 market very well as my last two vettes were C-2's. The car is a coupe with 81k orig. miles, supposedly. It has no orig. paperwork. It has no options other than a 4-sp and tele column. It has the base engine in it. The car overall is in pretty nice shape, with good paint and a solid frame. I would rate the car a very nice driver. So with my limited description, what are decent 68's bringing in these days?

327 or 427?
Original numbers matching all around?
No rust??...anywhere?????
Original paint? if repainted, original color?
Accidents? body panel replacements?

All the above plays a role in pricing.
If all original price goes up.
Small block mostly original probably b/w 17k & 26k.
Big block mostly original could get up to the 30k's depending on the above.

Fortunately 68's have a lot of one year only items makign them unique...unfortunately that makes them more expensive to fix when those one year only parts break. There is also a reason why those parts only made it into production for that one year and were changed for the 69 production run.
I love my 68, one year only parts didn't play a part in my decision to buy this over a 69. However I do like the absence of the reverse light in the brake lights. Its all personal preference.
Pics would help narrow a lot down.

I'd love to take a stab at a price range. Any pictures?

Keep in mind that the '68 is kind of a unique car in that it has some parts that are for that year only. Finding some of them can be difficult.

Ditto on the question about paint condition, which engine, rust status. Without that info, no decent estimate can be given. As presently described, that '68 could be worth anything between $7000-$30,000.

OK, Here's what he has:

1. 81K miles on the car

2. BASE engine, which means no 427, a 327

3. Good paint, good frame

4. 4 speed, with tele. No other opitons...presumably.

5. Poster states it's a very nice driver.

6. The car is a coupe, less then half of the production year for '68's were coupes.

Oneputt, even though '68's are unique and have some one year only parts, don't let that scare you off. If the car in question has all of the unique parts in good condition, then you are ahead of the game. I have a '68 coupe that has all of the so-called unique parts present. Most of the Corvette suppliers have these parts in their catalogs. Without seeing any pics, the car would be worth somewhere between 15 - 25K, maybe more.

Thanks 427-390. I thought by putting it was a base engine car readers would know it was a 327-300, sorry for the confusion. I'm going to look at the car today and will know more then. One other option it has is shoulder belts. I was just trying to get a feel to what 68's are worth as I have owned mid-years the last 7 or 8 years. Also he told me the fiber optics dont work.

$15-25k sounds high for a base coupe. I would have said $10-15k.

For a base engine coupe that is described as a "nice driver", that sounds about right. More than $15K is out of line.

Just got back from looking at the 68. Very nice car. I'd rate it as a very nice driver, maybe a #2 car. Nice paint, nice chrome, very nice interior. The frame was spotless, no rust whatsoever. The only question I have about it, is with the interior code. The trim tag reads 411 which is dark blue vinyl. I thought the trim tag should have read 414 which is med. blue vinyl. I'm thinking it should be 414 because of the actual color of the interior. The actual color of the interior is the same color of 66 and 67 int. called bright blue. So my question is, what did dark blue and med. blue look like in 68 compared to the bright blue interiors of 66 and 67? The car also has the orig. engine. No paper work or history. It's at a dealer and he is asking 22.5. What do you think of this price?

That sounds pretty strong to me, the price that is. Any close-up pics?

$22K in this market for an 'undocumented' '68 base engine coupe in good shape is way out of line. If it had been a low hp 427 or a convertible [or both], maybe. I know that a dealer is going to "ask" more than a private owner...but that doesn't mean you have to pay him more for it. If you really, really like it, dicker up to $18K. If you go over that, it's just throwing away money, because you couldn't sell it for that much the very next day. (6 months ago he might have got $20K for it...but not with the economy the way it is.)

Thanks 7T1vette. I agree that 22.5 is high and I thought the same thing , that if I tried to sell it the next day no way i could get that for it. It is a nice car that I like a lot, but with no paper work or history and very few options I dont think its worth it. I'm still confused about the interior code. It's coded 411 which is Drk blue vinyl but the color of the int. is Bright blue (same color int. as 66 and 67 bright blue int.). I would have thought the code should be 414 which is med. blue vinyl. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Other than that, its a beautiful car that I'd like to own but it being at a dealer presents a problem. Thanks for any help with the interior discrepency you might provide.
