I'm trying to buy a '68 427-435 or 427-400 hp Vette. I have looked at several cars, and the issue of the stamps of the build date and partial VIN on the machined pad on the engine is becoming more fuzzy as I obtan more information.
I have a pic of the engine pad from a car I am currently evaluating. Could the experts weigh in their opinions of the originality of the stamp? Please email me at enrightengineer@aol.com and I will send a high resolution pic of the machine pad with stamps.
Posting the picture on this board will get you more replies. I know I don't send my E-Mail address to people I don't know. Post the picture, PLEASE!!!
Regards,
Alan
No games...why would you ask such a question? I am just trying to buy an original car. I can't post pics because I am not a supporting member. I would like some additional opinions on the pad stamps of a car that I'm currently looking at. I thought that this was the correct area of the Forum to ask such questions. There seems to be many experts out there with differing opinions, so I don't want to rely a one or two particular people. I am looking for a more diverse group of opinions. The last car I came close to buying turned out to have a rusty frame in addition to questionable pad stamps. I appreciate any help that people can offer.
I got your PM- you're not doing yourself any favours by the methods you've used looking for help. It appears devious and that you've got something to hide.
1) you don't need to be a supporting member to post pictures. ANYBODY can sign up for a free account at photobucket, inbox.com, etc.etc and post pictures till your blue in the face.
see:
2) you've asked the same question twice but have never asked for help in how to post pictures despite being given a big hint.
3) if you're serious about buying a high dollar car, don't be so cheap. Join up here and at the NCRS site.
4) even if people give a thumbs up on a pad, it's only an initial step. You'll still need to get some people to physically look at the car in person.
People are here to help, be up front with your request and your motives.
notice the word engineer in the e-mail address just what are you really asking here?
have to say that some of you guys are paranoid about the stamp questions. just because he's an engineer he has knowledge of how to copy a gm stamp i'm an engineer and wouldnt have a clue how to copy a stamp but got the same bs when asking about my stamp. lighten up - this should be a safe place for juniors to ask for expert help. peace

Reason: missing words
I can't believe the reaction of some members of this forum. Comments such as "What's your game?"....."devious..." ...."cheap...." serve no positive purpose to Forum readers. What is wrong with some of you people? Is your "mission" on the Forum just to harass others? Are you just bored with time to waste? I come looking for help and I receive insults from pompous members. I've copied the information (shown below) from the forum page that my thread is on. Please notice that it states "You may not post attachments." If someone can tell me how to post them....please let me know. Also, please keep the rude comments to yourself.

Mike Ward - Apparently you didn't read my first posting, where I asked for opinions regarding a stamp which I was unable to post because my membership status does not allow it. Can I be any more up front then that?
Before you accuse others of nefarious activites, you should read the posting and have a clear understanding of it. I thought this Forum was a place to ask for help, not be the target of rude comments.
To DJordan442 - Thanks for the support. I joined the Forum about five years ago to be able to periodically peruse the site and respond to, or ask, questions. Prior to joining the Forum, I had been told by more than a few local (San Francisco Bay Area) Corvette people tell me that there were some really rude people on the Forum, but it was still a good resource to obtain helpful information from a diverse group of people. I'm disappointed that by asking questions I find myself open to rude comments and ridicule from people who apparently have nothing better to do than look for "devious intentions". I do not understand why such people waste time "stirring the pot". Jack
I've included the link to the pad pic in Photobucket. Thanks for the help, DZRick.
I don't know why the pic is so large, but at least I was able to get in onto the web site. Now, are there any opinions on the stamp originality? This is the only pic of the stamp that I have. Thanks, Jack

Please take your own advice. Before accusing others, please read my post and have a clear understanding of it where I challenged your 'inability to post pictures'. I suggested that you go to one of many sites INCLUDING photobucket that will host the pictures for you. Others suggested similar things in this and your other post...........Jeeze!
Regarding the photo, the pad should little or no traces of paint. Until the paint is cleared away, all bets are off. You might want to also mention what year of car and engine type it's supposed to be. I'll reverse engineer this one and guess you're looking at a '68 L71.
Can't read the VIN derivative- does it match the car VIN?
The car in question is a 1968 427-435hp vehicle. The owner has the original tank sticker verifying it as an original 435hp car, but no other supporting documentation. The VIN derivative on the engine matches the VIN. I don't have access to the car because I am dealing by long distance. I don't know whether the owner will clean the paint off the pad to allow closer scutiny, but I can ask.
Aside from not knowing what lies underneath the paint on the pad, do the font styles and sizes look correct (or incorrect) to the Forum readers? Since the VIN derivative impression is dim for some characters, is this a typical issue with hand block-stamps? Perhaps the dimmer characters are just filled with paint?
Otherwise, I assumed (incorrectly) that because my membership
indicates "no attachments" that I would not be able to place a link to my pic in the body of the document. Thanks again to DZRick. Thanks to all who can help. Jack
if you ask the owner to take another picture of the pad, make sure to tell him to be careful when removing the paint. not sure how savvy he/she is and you dont want to use any abrasives or worse yet sand paper to get the paint off. Good luck

If I had to decide whether this is a real or fake pad, at this point I'd have to say that it looks more some of the 'too perfect' restamps I've seen. Do a search on this or any other site and look at other known genuine stamps.
Font size is easy to get right. Getting the pad to look like the engine/car right before it and after it on the assembly line in it's entirety is extremely difficult.
This is not NCRS Flight Judging evaluation you're after here, it's dropping 5 or 6 figures on a car. Get ahold of Al Grenning and pay whatever he wants to evaluate it professionally.
If the seller won't clean the pad for you he won't get original engine money for his car from any buyer with half a brain. Pretty simple.
If he still won't clean it, offer him a NOM price and walk away.
