Default Help with fuel pump needed.

I have just bought a NOS fuel pump for my 1972 LT1 5.7ltr engine,

On the outside of the box it has, part number 42240 made by Airtex sure power written on it, on the fuel pump it has AC on the side and I think the number is 010042440.

The paper work inside says Use only on 366 396 402 427 and 454 C.I.D. Engines. For 283 302 307 350 and 400 Engines. these Engines have a 3/16 Spacer between pump and block with two bolts.

Is this the right fuel pump for my engine?

Jerry,
I believe the # for your 72 LT-1 fuel pump should be 40956.
I don't see any listing for 42440, from 68 thru 72 small or big block . Whether that pump would work for your 72, I don't know.
Regards,
Alan

I got the fuel pump from ebay and the ad said it was for a 1976-1981 I am putting this LT1 engine into a 1977 corvette, perhaps I got it all wrong but I thought a fuel pump for a 1976-1981 would also fit an LT1 motor, what do you think?

My GM Corvette parts book calls out the same part number for all 350's. 6470308 (40769). Big Block is 6470309 (40770).

It will probably fit the motor but don't expect the lines to line up correctly. All SB fuel pumps will fit the block but to fit the frame and the fuel lines are a different story. The LT1 motors use a specific fuel pump.

One problem you will have is that all 1970 thru 1972 LT-1 cars had a Holley carb. Therefore the fuel pump does not have a return line nipple.

If you have a a Quadra-Jet carb. then that alone will prevent this pump from working.

You car also has a return line nipple on the fuel tank that needs to be accounted for.

Thanks for your help so far

If the fuel pump I have bought doesn't fit do you know where to get one for a 1972 LT1 SB?

Most all the the vendors will carry the correct fuel pump. I took mine off 2 years ago for my 72 LT1. The pump is 12 years old though. Probably only about 5000 miles on it. I bought mine from Zip years ago.

Not certain, but I think the pump for the LT-1 engine had a higher capacity than standard SB...in addition to the differences mentioned already. With WOT, a std. pump on an LT-1 would likely limit performance.

Here is some info on ordering a correct LT-1 fuel pump

2 options

1st. Zip products in Virginia has a correct looking AC labeled pump but it is 144.50 part # is CZ1115 (AC # 40956)

2nd. Zip has a replacement LT-1 pump w/o the AC logo cast into the housing that sells for 45.00. part # CZ424

Zip Products phone # 1-800-962-9632

Corvette Central in Michigan only showed the replacement type pump.

Their part # is 353150 and the price is 32.00

Their phone # is 1-800-345-4122

Zip will get the order out same day if ordered early and they do not charge extra for same day service.

Corvette Central usually takes 2 days for the item to leave their facility unless you pay their in house rush service fee. ( I do not like that )

So there are some options

Good luck with your project

BBC fuel pumps are NOT interchangable with SBC engines. Any auto parts stores will carry it or only 1 day away without high S&H charges
