Default kickdown switch

This is my problem, I have a 1976 with a Turbo 400 transmission. It doesnt leak and it shifts just fine. The issue is it wont downshift for passing. I have been told it is the electric kickdown switch which works off a switch located under the accellorater pedal and is located on the left side of the tranny. I have no access to a lift and wonder is this something a novice could do or should I take it to a shop.

Could be wiring at the switch or solenoid and/or adjustment of the switch. The switch is way up under the dash and kinda hard to see.

Read through some of these from search:

I put mine on 4 jackstands and put on a Lokar unit (original not hooked when purchased). Very easy to do. Jack it up first and look, you might not wanna do it.

Hy,
I have exactely the same problem with my 1975 and TH400. I did a post for it.

I have no 12v on the orange wire wich go to the solenoid. I think is it because my tachometer is down. Does your Tach work fine or is down too?

It depends on the 'defect' in the system. If it is the under-dash switch, then you can adjust and/or repair easily. But the tranny had a solenoid valve on the valve body (inside the tranny oil pan) which has to function, also. Use a voltmeter to see if your dash kickdown switch passes 12vdc to the tranny. If it does, the switch inside the tranny is bad. It is not difficult to change out (2 small bolts to mount it to the underside of the valve body), but you have to drop the pan. Maybe find a replacement solenoid valve and make the change the next time you change tranny fluid and filter.
