Default Rear window storage - '72

It was almost 2 years before I discovered the "secret" drop down shelf that holds the rear window in my '72! Now that I'm finally on the road again after working on her for a year, I"m wondering if there should be some sort of padding or vinyl insert to hold the window in place on said shelf. Right now it's just hard metal. ???????

Thanks!

alanbl,

The '72 window storage tray is molded fiberglass. It has a shaped sunken area that the window resides in. At the back of the tray near the cargo courtesy lamp location is a rubber coated bracket that the 'frame' portion of the window is fit into, so that the window is securly held in place and won't move around. There is no need for anything else.

early shark, I don't know about yours but mine rattles while driving so I put some 1 inch wide weather strip foam around the edge to keep it quiet. It sticks very tightly in the factory rubber coated bracket but it still made rattling noises around the edges.

For my 71 I always put a towel under the window to give it some padding and to stop the rattle.

Soft weatherstripping foam is a perfect choice to solve that problem. You may only need a few pieces, rather than put it all the way around.

There should be two rubber bumpers on each end. I think the bumpers used in the rear compartments are the same. Mine rattled put the bumpers on and it solved that.

I do have the bumpers on the tray (although the drivers side bumper keeps getting knocked out and has to constantly be re-installed). There is no rattle when the window is not in the tray.

No rubber bumpers on mine. I used a towel today - worked great! Are the bumpers available from Zip or someone else? Yes, I'm just asking here instead of doing my own search.

Default no rattle when up

Mine doesn't rattle much until I hit a bump or two and the stupid tray drops down. Without the window in it the tray stays up fine; have not investigated further but might try locking the tray to see if it keeps it from falling; or look to see if there is an adjustment of some sort...

The catch on the tray is identical to the ones in your storage compartments. You might try swapping to see if that helps. I swapped mine because the one on the tray had a groove worn in it from years of rubbing on the striker. I had to push up on the tray before I could push the button.

Doc Rebuild carries all the little rubber bumpers, stops, pads, etc....

See this thread, post #20 for pictures on when I restored my rear window tray...

Hear is how I handled the storage tray........I used the same material in the old cardboard glove box......I think this material worked out great.

It's a oil drip pad.......you are supposed to put it under the car to soak up drips so your concrete floor stays clean, It was cheep at Pep boys for a 3x3ft roll. The texture is vary soft,it reminds me of the grey trunk liners in some cars.

I just made paper templates of the tray and cut them out and spray glue to hold the down. I also used the rubber gasket on the lip.....all rattles gone.

The hold up handle is bent metal and can be adjusted not to drop.

How much more wind goes thru the car with the window out as opposed to in? Just curious since my window is fixed in place.

I don't really notice much difference whether the window is in or out.
