Default wiper arm control valve function

Can someone explain the way this vacum valve works? Is the wiper arm supposed to push on the end of this valve when it is closing? If it is,what is it doing? Thanks

the arm pushes the valve end down, and allows vacuum to pass thru to control relay. then the wiper door can close. remember that all these vacuum systems have a fault value of no vacuum on relay-open door.

Another way to say it is that it is the control relay for the wiper door - it tells the door that it is "safe" to close. If it doesn't close all the way first check the LH wiper to make sure it is not "holding up" the right hand wiper not allowing it to hit the valve top.

Not intending to complicate the discussion, but the valve under the right-side wiper is not really the controlling switch...it is a safety interlock switch for assuring that the wipers are down and seated before the wiper vacuum/solenoid switch [located on back of tach housing] will allow the door to close. {Just trying to help the poster understand how the system is set up.}

7T1vette - thanks for the further information. Very helpful. OF NOTE - I see in some catalogs you can now get that solenoid switch which until recently was very hard to find. Of course, you will be paying thru the nose.

Since we are on the subject - I understand the wiper door rear molding is made of stainless steel - on my '70 that molding is completely painted over but I remember someone on the forum that said the top of his was stainless -what/how should it be??? Tnx

Just the little bead near the windshield should show stainless. The rest of the trim piece is body color. The same goes for the 2 small pieces of trim at the rear of each fender near the windshield.
